At ChowNow, the Product Design team has a passion for helping restaurants thrive and making an impact on our local communities. We’re working on big challenges, with the goal of helping local restaurants survive, thrive, and build relationships with the customers who love them. Product Designers are invaluable to ChowNow’s mission and customer experience.

As our company enters a new stage of growth, we’re looking for highly skilled, collaborative, and proactive Designers who can champion and further our culture of human-centered design and innovation.

About the Position:

Through human-centered design methods, Product Designers understand and anticipate pain points, define vision states, and design + codify ChowNow’s digital language. This Principle Product Design position requires expert visual and systems design skills as they will be responsible for the ChowNow Digital Design System(s). This is a crucial role, with the goal of driving delightful yet performant UI as a usable system across our products and platforms. Through collaboration with Product Designers, Brand Designers, Engineers, and Product Managers, the Principal Product Designer will plan, organize, execute, and guide our Product Design team to define, implement, and scale our design system. Additionally, they will contribute to initiatives at the squad level– defining vision states, iterating on features, and identifying opportunities for improvements.

Lastly, this role will champion human-centered design across the organization to develop scalable, intuitive, and performant products that our customers love.

The decisions you make will have a huge impact on our customers and provide great learning opportunities for the product organization. Understanding the importance of user testing and feedback is integral to developing efficient products at ChowNow, and you will work cross-functionally to identify research opportunities, iterate on customer feedback, and empower one another.

Specifically you will:

  • Develop and facilitate a rhythm to evolve and maintain the design system.
  • Work with Product Designers, PMs and Engineers to develop low-level plans to implement the design system in our various products and platforms.
  • Frame problems, objectives and help define design solutions via artifacts such as user flows, journey’s, wireframes, comps and prototypes.
  • Design dev-ready specs, including prototypes, interaction/motion studies, and package them in a digestible format for efficient development.
  • Identify opportunities for user research and Production-level experiments, in collaboration with Experience Designers, Researchers, and Product Managers. Develop artifacts to use as stimuli in research studies such as wireframes, comps, and prototypes
  • Work closely with Designers, Engineers and Product Managers to define product opportunities and contribute to the overall product strategy.
  • Communicate your thoughts and decisions effectively to various teams, including the executive team.

Within 30 days you will:

  • Complete our ChowNow New Hire Onboarding Experience.
  • Learn the ins and outs of ChowNow and our process.
  • Observe 4 product demos with the sales team to better know our customers.
  • Conduct an analysis of ChowNow’s products, the competitive landscape.
  • Conduct an assessment of ChowNow’s Design System and develop a high-level plan of initial actions.
  • Determine a high-level plan to define the Design System structure, acknowledging the various products and platforms.

Within 60 days you will:

  • Present a working charter and plan for our Design System development, implementation and maintenance to cross-functional teams.
  • Provide a functioning Figma library for squads to use across respective squad work for at least 1 product.
  • Deliver your first set of user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity interaction designs for a new feature.
  • Prepare your first set of detailed design specs for the engineering team.
  • Define the metrics you will use to determine the success of your first design solution.
  • Communicate your design decisions with stakeholders and the larger team.

Within 90 days you will:

  • Provide a functioning Figma library for squads to use across respective squad work for at least 2 products.
  • Talk to customers and the support teams to gain empathy for customer problems, needs, and mental models.
  • Launch any combination of a design system improvement and/or feature within a squad.
  • Conduct user testing to help inform product decisions and implement new design thinking based on customer feedback.
  • Facilitate cross-functional Design system meetings with Brand Design, Product Design, and Engineering.

You should apply if:

  • You have a minimum of 7 years experience as a product designer in web and mobile environments (iOS and Android) in either an agency or in-house product team. Ideally both.
  • You have an industry-leading portfolio featuring detailed case studies and design system work.
  • You have demonstrated experience with end-to-end (hybrid UX and UI) product design on multiple platforms including native mobile applications.
  • You have a deep understanding of how to frame a problem and work with the team to synthesize product strategies and iterate on solutions.
  • You’re a highly motivated individual who is self-directed and can work under ambiguous conditions
  • You are a Type-A designer who cares deeply about organization and details.
  • You have experience delegating tasks and mentoring more junior designers (though not necessarily as a people manager)

  • You have the ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas to stakeholders and grow our Product Design practice within the organization.
  • You have experience iterating rapidly and shipping software frequently to evolve a product over time, such as with SaaS products and mobile applications.
