The Design organization at Dave is composed of 4 pillars: Research & Insights, Product Design, Design Platform, and Design Operations. Design Platform plays a crucial role in speeding the delivery of meaningful experiences to our end user. In combination, our pillars enable a design culture that supports risk taking and innovation and values quality and flexibility. 


We’re looking for an inspiring Director to drive consistency, quality, and delivery for our users across our Design Platform team. This role reports directly to the VP of Design. The Design Platform team lays the foundation across our consumer experiences. The team includes content strategy, design systems, illustration, brand design, prototyping, etc: all of the kit of bits that are required to power our experiences and delivery to customers. Your focus will be on the craft and delivery of the design and content systems and platform ui. You’ll be in a position to shape the core experience of our app via your delivery of these foundational elements of the Dave experience. 


As the Director, Design Platform, you will oversee our roadmap, common application infrastructure and our component and design pattern library. You and your team will work closely with internal stakeholders and our product, design and engineering team to bring simplicity and consistency to the components of our user experience. 


Additionally, you’ll serve on the leadership team for the design org-- you’ll be fundamental to creating our culture. You’ll provide thoughtful leadership to your reports and mentorship to the broader team. You’ll also partner with the rest of design leadership, tackling when and how to systematize how we work as a group. We’re looking forward to you! 


While your product work-- and the team’s work-- itself will not be in the 0-1 space, this is a 0-1 role; a space for seekers and builders.

What you'll do

  • Build and manage a talented, diverse, inclusive team of product designers and design managers that consistently delivers on projects and is well-balanced across a range of design skill sets.
  • Oversee and guide the ongoing design and development of our design system, ui toolkits, pattern language, and design repositories
  • Drive collaboration and vision across the different design crafts to create a cohesive set of components for use by product design pillar. Additionally, drive alignment across all of design org around what “good” looks like, system use and adoption, and standards development.
  • Help set direction, including setting a long-term, aspirational vision and defining the team’s goals, quarterly OKRs, roadmap, and sprint commitments
  • Oversee multiple projects and scale design resources accordingly, ensuring deadlines are met, your team is effective, and designers are set up for success by setting clear and measurable goals.
  • Advocate for the user in partnering to prioritize roadmap, and model advocacy and balance for your team, and the design org as a whole. 
  • Develop design talent and contribute to a culture where designers grow in their careers with a sense of inclusion, belonging, opportunity and altruism. 
  • Foster a strong, collaborative design practice within your team and throughout the Design organization.

What you'll need

  • 10+ years of experience in Product Design
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience with direct reports under your guidance and leadership, including hiring and developing both managers and individual contributors
  • 5+ years of experience working collaboratively with product, engineering, design, content and user research teams
  • A deep understanding and demonstrated experience with the of the formal elements of design, not just limited to the web but including typography, layout, balance, and proportion
  • A proven track record as a highly effective people leader
  • A passion for excellence with the ability to inspire others to the highest standards Ability to effectively lead the team through change
  • An ability to communicate with clarity and consistency and provide an appropriate level of transparency on matters that impact team members’ work and ability to be successful
  • Strong emotional intelligence
  • Credibility and gravitas to garner the respect and support of the design team, leadership team and other key stakeholders
  • Success in attracting and retaining high performing, values aligned team members and creating a team culture where the team can thrive
