 tronc Optimization Team

This team is designed to accelerate tronc’s digital growth by working with the local markets to identify the right opportunities to package, enhance and distribute our storytelling to a wider audience. This “strike" team will play an integral role in creating a cohesive content strategy across all tronc markets, which include the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Sun Sentinel, The San Diego Union-Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, Hartford Courant, The Morning Call and Daily Press.


What You Will Do

You will oversee video initiatives designed to help local markets grow video views and revenue. You will supervise a team of video editors and analysts/producers, who will create videos with a sense of immediacy and relevancy to the tronc markets. You will ensure that videos produced by the team meet the highest standards of accuracy and fairness. The Tronc Video Team and Tronc Optimization Team will work closely together to grow the audience on market websites in real time. You must have expertise editing video and working with software applications for video and audio editing, as well as a working knowledge of the CMS and in the use of various social platforms and tools. The expectations of the position include journalistic excellence, innovation and strategic programming to grow audience. Newsroom leadership experience is a plus.

  • Oversee team that produces high-quality videos.
  • Maintain high level of expertise and reliability with respect to newsgathering, accuracy and ethics.
  • Partner with Tronc Optimization Team and markets to monitor audience goals and metrics.
  • Train and motivate newsrooms in all things video.
  • Direct development and growth of company video strategy.
  • Create an atmosphere that encourages risks, holds employees accountable and offers development opportunities.
  • Continuously work with team to improve innovation, quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the markets to ensure videos meet the established standards.
  • Determine video trends and audience patterns and guide the markets in the appropriate direction.
  • Set the guidelines for the presentation of videos for all appropriate digital channels, including our own sites and apps, social media platforms and 3rd-party aggregators.
  • Meet or exceed metrics goals for video views and revenue.
  • Solicit feedback from markets to ensure workflow efficiency.
  • Provide reports regarding trends and outside competition to senior managers.

This Could be a Match if You Have…

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10-plus years of experience in digital publishing and/or video programming.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • An understanding of libel, access, privacy and copyright laws affecting video journalism.
  • A working knowledge of software applications for video and audio editing, such as Final Cut and Adobe Premiere.
  • Expert knowledge of content management systems.
  • Keen sense of social media and how to maneuver in the digital space.
  • Ability to collaborate with markets to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Strong aptitude for digital analytics and the ability to communicate the results to employees.
  • Experience leading a team tasked with developing new products, services or content applications is required.
  • A passion for audience development, news and information dissemination, and the transformation of traditional media.
  • Excellent leadership and motivation skills to manage a team through change.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
