About this Role:

We’re looking for a seasoned entrepreneurial technology leader to lead the development of our Frontend platforms - Web and Native Mobile. As Sr. Director of Engineering, Frontend you’ll be part of the Engineering Leadership team and will be responsible for managing frontend engineers and engineering managers, making key frontend platform decisions, setting the technical direction and be a change agent as we transition to Continuous Delivery. You’ll be a technology consultant, advocate and partner for the Product Management, Design, UX and Project Management teams.

Detailed Responsibilities

Project Delivery:
  • Working collaboratively with Product Management and Frontend Engineering to ideate, scope, plan, estimate, coordinate, derisk and deliver large company-roadmap level projects.
  • Identifying process bottlenecks and opportunities for continuous improvement of our software delivery processes.
  • Mentoring the Frontend team on modern best practices in Software Development.
  • Identifying and flagging risks early, working proactively to remove blockers for the team.
  • Allocating frontend engineering bandwidth based on business needs.


Business Alignment:
  • Partner with Backend, Infrastructure, Product, UX & Design teams to come up with creative technology solutions to business problems.
  • Communicating technical topics effectively to business partners.
  • Improving visibility into frontend engineering projects, architecture and development workflows for business partners.
  • Translating business needs and priorities for the frontend engineers and ensuring that they are aligned with the business.


Team Building & Management:
  • Attracting, hiring & retaining highly skilled engineers.
  • Assessing skills & building career development plans for the team.
  • Mentoring the team on both Technical and Management aspects.
  • Raising the general leadership level of the team.
  • Setting actionable goals for the team, aligned with company and department goals.
  • Fostering good working relationships both within the team and between frontend engineers and their partners.

Evolving the Frontend Platform:
  • Constantly evaluating and stress testing our frontend tech stack and identifying opportunities & risks.
  • Keeping up with the latest trends in frontend technologies, especially as it relates to e-commerce experience.
  • Nurturing the health and architecture of our frontend platforms as we regularly add features to it.
  • Collaboratively building a frontend platform roadmap and driving the delivery and execution of it.
  • Driving continuous testing/integration/delivery best practices for frontend platforms.
  • Fostering healthy discussion on technology topics within the team and drive them towards making data-informed decisions.
  • Ensuring that our production frontend applications and build pipelines are performant, reliable, responsiveness, maintainable and of high quality with minimal tech debt.


Individual Contribution:
While this position is not expected to be an individual contributor on a consistent basis, a person filling this role is expected to be hands-on enough to be able to jump in and help their team with technical issues or handle production spelunking as needed. To this end, picking a small project or two every now and then to keep in touch with our stack is expected.

What we’re looking for

  • 10+ years of relevant software development experience with at least 4 of those years successfully managing and building technical teams of 15+ engineers and engineering managers.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and delivering projects using Agile development practices. Experience with Continuous Delivery is a big plus.
  • Experience with Single Page Applications & Javascript Client-Side MVC frameworks. Experience with Ember and React is a big plus.
  • Experience with node.js and Docker-based build pipelines.
  • Experience building high-traffic frontend-experience-heavy sites and native mobile applications.
  • Experience building native mobile experiences that take advantage of the platform’s unique capabilities.
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs.
  • Experience in the e-commerce domain is a big plus.
  • Experience with Internationalization and Localization is a big plus.
  • Experience with building accessible sites.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • A good eye for Design and UX principles.
  • A passion for mentoring and building strong technical leaders.
