The Role:

As a Senior Systems Engineer on the Platform Engineering team, the prospective hire would be responsible for the engineering and implementation of our Platform as a service tool suite. This includes build pipeline tooling (Jenkins and Nexus), Configuration Management (Chef and Docker) as well as our Zabbix and Splunk infrastructure and other ancillary services our team provides.

 

Responsibilities:

The candidate should be able to both learn quickly and apply the experience and knowledge that’s been retained over years of experience to provide sustainable solutions for the platform  engineering team. The main responsibility will be to both manage and implement our Platform as a service tool suite. This will involve the support of current automation and self-service tools, as well as writing new tools to assist in the sustainability of the team. This candidate should be able to provide mentorship for the more junior members of the team.

 

We expect that this candidate would be able to periodically review our teams offerings to assess areas that can be improved, automated and handed over to other operational teams with runbooks for the routine work to be fielded.

 

Proficiencies:

- 10 years of system administration experience

- Strong Linux System Administration experience

- Strong customer service, organizational skills

- Knowledge of Customer policies and procedures

- Well versed in scripting/programming (BASH, Python)

- Experience with Configuration Management and Orchestration tools (Chef)

- Experience with Splunk, ELK and other log analytics tooling

 

Job Requirements

- Candidate shall have at least ten (10) years experience as a Systems Administration experience administering user accounts, performing server subsystem configuration, network management, installation of software, performing backups, and general system maintenance.

- UNIX system administration experience (Linux, Solaris), understanding of fundamental networking and distributed computing environment concepts, performance tuning and capacity planning of servers (hardware and software levels).

- Knowledge of query syntax, data flows and of how to manipulate traffic.

- In-depth experience in troubleshooting IT systems.

- Demonstrated work experience providing detailed analysis and feedback to agency management and internal customers for escalated tickets.

 

Desired Skills:

-Understand virtualization: i.e. Hypervisors/containers/VMs/Docker

-Experience with Amazon Web Services or Openstack to build Virtual Private Cloud environments

-Experience setting up Jenkins CI server

-Experience with Zabbix or other monitoring tools

-Experience in Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban

-Self-starter, capable of working both independently and in team environments
