We are seeking a motivated physicist who has excellent leadership, communication, and mentoring skills to serve as the Quantum Systems Lead within the Advanced Test Systems Department at HRL Laboratories. The Advanced Test Systems Department is an integrated product team of mechanical, electrical, production, integration engineers, and physicists all working together to design and build advanced cryogenic test systems in support of HRL’s world-leading silicon quantum dot technologies. The Quantum Systems Lead position will involve managing a team of physicists and engineers in understanding the impact of environmental parameters on our quantum dot performance. The following would be key responsibilities; contributions in technical leadership in directing research, mentoring technical staff within the group, shaping the staff’s career development plans, and support a culture of technical excellence across functional teams/partnerships. In addition, the Quantum Systems Lead will work closely with the Department Manager and Deputy Department manager in forming strategic technical planning supporting critical programs and career development plans that are consistent within the department. Experience in a research and development environment along with strategic planning is desired.
Essential Duties:
Leading multidisciplinary research in advanced cryogenic test systems, leveraging experience in fields ranging from quantum measurements, modeling/simulations, to cryogenics.
Provide strategic plan and guidance to the team on key customer objectives/deliverables.
Group staff planning which includes; recruiting, writing job requisitions, and hiring.
Mentoring engineers and physicists to support their career development (including performance reviews) and building an environment of inclusivity.
Help build and maintain relationships with our customers and partners through technical excellence and integrity (e.g. communications via reviews, written reports, etc.).
Support future business development involving proposals and critical strategic planning.
Required Skills:
Experience in technically leading a team toward an objective/mission.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and have willingness to mentor.
At least 5 years of technical experience in providing/leading contributions on several research projects
Experience with various cryogenic systems, specifically dilution refrigeration systems.
Experience with analytical and modeling analysis.
Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to work independently.
Required Education:
Minimum PhD degree in Physics or Applied Physics, or closely related discipline with at least 8 years of industry experience.
Special Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship is required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $163,150 - $209,088 + bonus + benefits.
