Data Engineering Manager

             

 

As a Database Engineering Manager at Legalzoom - you’ll lead a talented team of Database Engineers who are responsible for designing and implementing solutions that have scale, speed and are extensible in delivering product features and metrics to drive the company forward. This role requires a balance of management/leadership responsibilities while having a percentage time for hands on technical contribution.

 

This role involves design for new/existing development transportation technologies, identify and architecting the right RDBMS solutions like Oracle, MySQL, Big Data or No SQL technologies, executing projects to deliver high quality deliverables on time, defining development processes for continuous improvement, driving the technology direction and leading the database engineering team effectively.

What you’ll do: 

  • Experience in leading a team to dramatically improve data engineering capabilities
  • Encourage innovation of process and creative development methodologies
  • Keep interest and excitement levels high, inside and outside of the department
  • Facilitate learning and growth on the team
  • Develop roadmaps and participate in the standards process for Data Services
  • Contributes to the department’s identity, standards, guidelines and best practices
  • Managing and working with remote development teams  
  • Lead data engineering activities, including requirement analysis, design, planning, development and testing oversight
  • Perform data modelling and normalization at an expert level
  • Partner with architecture teams to develop solution designs
  • Maintain deep technical and business knowledge of industry directions and trends in the area of data and system engineering
  • Drive to deliver technology and products in the roadmap on schedule and with the highest quality
  • Provide support for operations and support teams, including root cause analysis and preventative analysis
  • Shape the work of mitigating day-to-day issues into more coherent and robust systems
  • Extensive experience with databases including SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, and/or Hadoop or other NoSQL solutions
  • Ability to engineer solutions that are highly available, scalable and extensible
  • Proficient knowledge in designs practices including OLTP, reporting, and OLAP; big data processing and analytic technologies including Hadoop, R, and stream processing; standard and ad hoc reporting solutions; ETL and MDM data management tools

 

Required Skills

Qualifications: 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Established leadership skills with a team-player mentality required
  • A depth of experience in data modeling, data development, application design, data exchange, data governance and meta-data best practices
  • BS or MS in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Systems
  • 10+ years of data engineering and development experience; 5+ years with ecommerce
  • Minimum of 5+ years of management experience, preferably in data or software engineering
  • Experience in one or more database technologies: MS SQL, Oracle DBs, MySQL, Big Data, MongoDB, Cloud technologies, SQL, PL/SQL, UNIX shell
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong sense of self-motivation, organization and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills

 Preferred skills 

  • Experience with agile and waterfall development methodologies
  • Experience in leading and working with co-located teams

 Physical Requirements 

Work is primarily performed in a typical business office environment setting using standard office equipment. Occasional travel may be required.
