Assigning Editor
Overview:
The tronc team is designed to accelerate digital growth by working with local markets to maximize daily opportunities to package, visualize and distribute our storytelling to a wider audience. The team also will curate third-party content and play an integral role in creating a cohesive content strategy across all tronc markets, which include the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, South Florida Sun Sentinel, San Diego Union-Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, The Hartford Courant, The Morning Call and The Daily Press.
The Assigning Editor works with the video production team and editors from each newsroom to produce a high volume of daily video stories for distribution on news sites across the tronc network.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and edit the work of assigned staff and freelance contributors, ensuring coverage that meets our goal of being the most important provider of news and information in market.
- Help video editors develop shareable social style videos based on stories from tronc newsrooms.
- Copyedit scripts from video producers and proof videos to ensure the tone of the story is properly reflected.
- Ideate story concepts that can be used across multiple markets.
- Adhere to each editorial brand, voice, and mission across all content creation.
- Monitor online traffic (via Omniture/Chartbeat, Google Trends, Twitter Moments and other tools) and make adjustments, as needed.
- Ensure that all deadlines are met.
- Train, develop and evaluate video editors.
- Supervise the department in the absence of the video product manager.
- Monitor competition.
- Undertake special projects as assigned by the video product manager.
- Ensure that all activities and operations are performed in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations; and the department’s equal employment objectives are achieved.
Digital Production Responsibilities:
- Use email and/or Slack to facilitate collaboration with editors and video leads from each of the tronc newsrooms.
- Work designated shifts as a Top Story Editor, handling basic programming of web/mobile, in sync with Tronc Team.
- Make sure all videos have related items and SEO friendly headlines.
- Conceptualize and execute on formats and styles for engaging video content.
- Coordinate assigned coverage with other editors and Tronc Optimization Team.
- Be aggressive about asking for updates from reporters on hot stories to keep channels fresh.
- Monitor TV for local news broadcasts and social media updates throughout the day.
- Check national wire for content website may not have.
- Be prepared to write breaking news copy as a backstop to a video editor.
- Undergraduate degree in journalism or liberal arts or equivalent related experience.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in creating video content at a high-volume digital outlet.
- Must have experience writing scripts and copy for video.
- Must be adept at synthesizing a story to its most compelling and critical points.
- Must have video editing experience, preferably using Adobe Production Suite.
- Must be skilled in copy
- Excellent communication and management skills.
- Ability to develop credibility and strong working relationships in a complex organization.
- Uses and understands social media.
- Must be capable of working within newsroom’s content management system.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in reporting and editing.
