About Us

Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic brings sports fans the most comprehensive stories about the teams, sports and athletes they love. The Athletic’s newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs.

About the Role

The Athletic is looking for a creator-minded Sr. Social Producer to own the digital footprint of our new daily live show. You aren't just "managing accounts,” you are a digital-first filmmaker and strategist who knows how to stop the scroll.

Reporting to the Executive Producer, you will be embedded in the control room, identifying viral moments as they happen and translating them into high-performing social assets. You are equally comfortable editing a high-energy reel as you are moderating a fast-moving YouTube chat or filming "behind-the-scenes" content with our talent. You are the voice of the show to our community and the architect of its growth.

Responsibilities

  • Content Factory Execution: Rapidly identify, clip, and edit "must-see" moments from the live broadcast for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and X.
  • Bespoke Creation: Ideate and film original, social-first content with show talent (e.g., "fast-fire" Q&As, blind rankings, or reaction videos) that complements the main broadcast.
  • Live Community Management: Own the "front of house" during live broadcasts. You will moderate the live chat, highlight the best audience questions for the producers, and drive real-time engagement.
  • Social Strategy & Analytics: Build and maintain the show’s content calendar. You’ll use data to determine the best posting times, thumbnail styles, and platform-specific hooks to maximize reach.
  • Channel Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the show’s dedicated social handles, ensuring a consistent, witty, and authoritative voice that aligns with The Athletic brand.
  • Graphic/Video Editing: Use Premiere, CapCut, or Canva to create compelling visuals, memes, and info-graphics that translate complex sports stories into digestible social snacks.
  • Platform Innovation: Stay ahead of the curve on social trends and algorithm shifts. If there’s a new feature on YouTube or a trending sound on TikTok, you’re the first to figure out how the show can leverage it.

Requirements

  • 4+ Years in Social Content Creation: A proven track record of growing audiences for a sports or media brand.
  • Technical "Preditor" Skills: You are a "Producer/Editor." You must be proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro and mobile-first editing apps (CapCut, etc.). Basic filming skills (iPhone or DSLR) are a must.
  • Internet Fluency: You live on the platforms. You understand the nuance between a YouTube community post and an Instagram Story.
  • Sports Junkie: You know the memes, the rivalries, and the deep-cut references that sports fans care about. You know why a specific 15-second clip is most likely to resonate.
  • Multitasking Under Pressure: You can edit a clip while simultaneously monitoring a live chat and drafting a tweet.
  • Editorial Judgment: You understand The Athletic’s standard of journalism and can balance "viral" energy with brand integrity.

The annual base salary range for this role is $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location.

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.

We are excited to learn more about you and your experience. To keep our hiring process as fair and authentic as possible, we ask that you submit your own work and not use GenAI tools to generate substantive content during the application and interview process. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
