Senior AI reporter, TechCrunch - ** MUST BE LOCATED in the San Francisco Bay Area**

Are you a journalist who gets excited by the ping of breaking news notifications? Do you thrive on cultivating sources and competing to break the stories that matter? TechCrunch is seeking a versatile, enterprising tech reporter to join our San Francisco team, then cover the business of AI with a passion. As the leading outlet covering the business of innovation, we pull back the curtain for readers on what's next—whether it's a two-person startup working on something transformative or a tech giant's small but potentially game-changing project.

This isn't a desk job. You'll have the freedom to find and deliver stories across the entire Bay Area tech ecosystem. One day you might be covering a product launch at Apple Park, the next you could be cozying up to sources at the hottest LLM company in SOMA. You'll be part of a tight-knit team that values both independent initiative and collaborative excellence.

We're looking for someone who loves the news and wants to compete to break it - not someone content to sit back and watch their inbox fill up with press releases.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and quickly report on major AI developments, product launches, and breaking news as they happen
  • Uncover stories through document review, data analysis, and persistent sourcing
  • Translate complex technical developments (model architectures, benchmarks, research breakthroughs) for a general audience
  • Track regulatory developments, safety debates, and policy discussions in Washington and beyond
  • Develop and maintain a perspective on where the industry is heading
  • Attend major AI conferences and events for networking and coverage
  • Represent TechCrunch on our podcasts, on stage at our events, and by moderating panels at industry events
Qualifications
  • Proven track record of breaking news stories and cultivating high-level sources in the tech industry
  • Demonstrated ability to produce agenda-leading coverage on high-profile companies or specialized beats
  • Deep curiosity about the intersection of AI and everything, and how mature tech companies navigate competition from emerging firms
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to distill complex technological and business stories into clear, compelling narratives
  • Exceptional multitasking abilities—you can seamlessly switch between chasing breaking news and developing in-depth, long-term investigative pieces
  • A level of comfort - or eagerness to become comfortable - in interviewing executives on stage at events and speaking into a broadcaster's camera for video content
  • A minimum of three years of reporting experience
Ready to Break the Next Big Story?

If you're passionate about technology, love the thrill of breaking news, and want to work for the most trusted name in tech journalism, we want to hear from you.

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in CA, TechCrunch includes a reasonable estimate of the salary for this role. This accounts for the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including business or organizational needs, skill sets, experience and training, licensure, and certifications.

  • A reasonable estimate of the compensation is a $130,000 to $140,000 base salary.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
