xScion is seeking a highly skilled Java Engineer / Consultant with deep expertise in enterprise Java development, InnerSource practices, and software development lifecycle (SDLC) assessments. This role will support xScion engagements requiring independent verification and validation (IV&V), code quality analysis, reusable component evaluations, and SDLC maturity assessments within complex enterprise environments.
The Java Engineer / Consultant will conduct comprehensive technical reviews of shared Java components, assess development and integration SDLCs, evaluate InnerSource operating models, and provide recommendations to improve quality, maintainability, and engineering efficiency. This role is ideal for a senior engineer who excels in analyzing complex, multi-threaded systems and advising on best practices across development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
As a Senior Java Engineer/Consultant, You Will:
Code Review & Component Quality Assessment
- Perform deep technical code reviews across a portfolio of enterprise Java components
- Evaluate overall code integrity, structure, maintainability, and adherence to engineering best practices
- Analyze advanced Java constructs including multi-threading, concurrency, message-driven components, and reusable libraries
- Assess repository organization, branching strategies, build dependencies, and version control practices.
SDLC Review & Maturity Evaluation
- Evaluate SDLC processes used for developing, integrating, testing, and maintaining Java components
- Assess engineering practices including:
- coding standards,
- code review processes,
- unit/integration testing,
- CI/CD pipelines,
- release management,
- defect tracking,
- documentation and backlog hygiene
- Identify deficiencies, risks, and opportunities to improve engineering throughput, quality, and governance.
InnerSource Assessment
- Review InnerSource models, contribution workflows, documentation patterns, and governance structures.
- Assess the effectiveness of tooling (including modern/AI-based code review tools) used to support an InnerSource ecosystem.
- Provide recommendations to strengthen reusable component quality, adoption, maintainability, and contributor participation.
Technology Stack Expertise
Conduct assessments aligned to the enterprise Java ecosystem, including hands-on analysis in:
- Spring Framework family (Spring Boot, Spring Batch, Spring MVC, Spring Security)
- OSS Libraries (Apache Commons, Jackson, and related dependency sets)
- Messaging technologies (e.g., JMS)
- Build and package tools (Maven)
- Source code management (GitHub or similar platforms).
Findings, Reporting & Advisory
- Deliver clear, actionable technical findings and recommendations
- Produce both detailed engineering-level reports and executive-level summaries
- Present technical assessments to senior stakeholders and guide next steps for remediation and maturity improvements.
Collaboration & Engagement Management
- Work collaboratively with xScion project managers, architects, SREs, and SDLC specialists
- Adjust depth of review based on priority and impact assessments
- Provide weekly updates, risks, and status summaries.
To Be Successful, You Need:
- US Citizenship and willingness to complete an extensive background check which includes fingerprinting, drug testing and an interview
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise Java development.
- Strong expertise in the Spring ecosystem (Boot, Framework, Batch, Security, MVC).
- Demonstrated experience reviewing complex, multi-threaded, or high-reliability Java systems.
- Hands-on experience with Maven, dependency management, and build pipelines.
- Strong familiarity with Git-based workflows and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience with automated code quality, security scanning, and testing frameworks.
InnerSource & SDLC Expertise
- Experience designing, reviewing, or participating in InnerSource programs
- Strong understanding of open-source-style contribution models and governance
- Experience analyzing SDLC practices end-to-end, including requirements, development, QA, release, and maintenance.
Assessment Skills
- Experience conducting independent assessments of software products or development practices.
- Ability to identify critical engineering risks, architectural gaps, and structural weaknesses.
- Sound judgment in evaluating the quality and reliability of shared components and reusable libraries.
Consulting & Communication Skills
- Ability to communicate complex engineering findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent written communication, including report writing and executive summaries.
- Strong stakeholder management in a consulting environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in large-scale, distributed, or regulated enterprise environments.
- Certifications beneficial but not required:
- Java/OCP
- AWS/Azure Certifications
- CISA, CISSP
- PMI-ACP or Scrum certifications
- Familiarity with DevSecOps tooling, SAST/DAST/SCA tools, and architecture reviews.
