A Better Opportunity:

Better is seeking an Underwriting Training Manager to support our rapidly-growing Enablement team. This individual will manage and oversee a team of 12 Underwriter Trainers. The UW Training Manager will operate as a bridge partner between mortgage leaders and Enablement at Better. In this role, it will require understanding the needs of the Underwriting organization in order to facilitate the successful launch and scale of training programs to help our Underwriting Team grow and meet key performance objectives.

Our ideal candidate has strong subject matter expertise and experience as a manager on Underwriting at Better. They are strong in strategic planning, instructional design, facilitation, and program implementation, and are experienced in management and leadership best practices. 

Responsibilities will Include:

As Better's UW Training Manager, your responsibilities will be wide and evolving in scope. You can expect to actively contribute in the following ways:

  • Manage and oversee the Underwriting Training team; provide individual coaching and development to 12 Underwriting Trainers.
  • Create clear actionable growth plans for each UW Trainer and drive that growth until it's realized. 
  • Drive the performance of the team as a whole ensuring that our Underwriting Trainers are experts on the ground and are delivering on the team goals.
  • Partner with Underwriting Trainers in conducting ongoing needs assessments and designing strategic learning interventions for our Underwriting team at every stage of its growth. 
  • Monitor training program metrics and report actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • Act as a strategic thought partner in terms of program design for both onboarding and continuing education purposes.
  • Build and share their vision for the future state of the Underwriting Training program.
  • Bring innovative solutions and areas of improvement around learning and development to the table.
  • Ensure all participants are trained effectively and efficiently on key underwriting concepts and technical skills; be an Underwriting SME to help their trainers grow in terms of technical skills. 
  • This role is designated as ‘Remote Mode,’ and employees are not expected to report into a Better office at any time. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is not required unless fully remote employees attend an onsite, in-person meeting, office event, or otherwise interface with Better employees and/or customers in person.

About You:

  • 6+ years of people management experience (preference is underwriting team management experience)
  • Strong understanding and subject matter expertise in underwriting FNMA, FHLMC, and non-conforming mortgages as well as the underwriting methodology and philosophy (at least 3+ years of Underwriting experience)
  • Strong ability to develop and grow a team providing consistent actionable insights and feedback.
  • Strategic thought leadership experience and an ability to develop high level strategies. 
  • Experience building and managing stakeholder and cross-functional relationships. 
  • Passion and experience in Learning and Development, Enablement, and/or Coaching.
  • Goal-oriented problem solver that can prepare and execute action plans.
  • Composure and decision-making ability in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment.
  • Excellent communication, organization, prioritization and time management skills.
