Want to challenge yourself at a high-growth startup AND make a difference in the world?

A bit about us:
Who Gives a Crap sells beautiful, forest friendly toilet paper, paper towels and tissues and we donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for those in need. As much as we love toilet paper, the reason we’re in business is the impact we’re having on the world—to date we’ve donated $1,800,000 to our charity partners to fund sanitation projects in developing countries, and with your help we’re hoping to grow our impact 10-fold in the next couple of years..

We currently have a team of over 70 people working out of Melbourne, Manila, Los Angeles and China and we’ve got some super ambitious growth goals across Australia, North America, the UK and beyond. We’re never happy with the status quo, though, so we’re planning to double or triple our team in the next year, and we won’t stop growing until everyone in the world has access to a toilet.

A bit about the role:
We’re in the process of rethinking our digital experience, and we need your help. As our Head of Digital Product, you’ll ensure we deliver a seamless and delightful digital experience that works beautifully for our customers and our business. Reporting to our Chief of Product & Purpose (and co-founder), you’ll represent Digital Product on our Planning Team. Collaboration will be key to your success and you’ll regularly bring together our Growth, Logistics, Creative and Customer Experience teams to constantly seek to understand the needs of our customer and our teams.

You’ll take the reins of our digital product roadmap, lead the day to day prioritization of our backlog and identify, test and execute ideas at a rapid clip. We’re built on Shopify for the time being but you’re not afraid to push for more and more customization, while staying true to one of our core values: Be Scrappy. You’ll define and track our performance metrics and drive continual improvements to see us deliver results we’ve never dreamt of putting into writing.

You’ll manage our Front End Developer and Digital Product Designer and our agency partner relationship. And you’ll lead the strategy for growth within the team, quickly hiring more in-house talent across our engineering, design and product management. And you’ll ensure our team members are kicking ass and staying happy through all this growth, helping us achieve our crazy goals and still get a good night’s sleep.

You’ll probably have a few ‘oh, crap’ moments along the way but you’ll pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and ensure we’re all a bit wiser because of them. You will also feel totally supported and have a hell of a good time, we promise!

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

  • Launched a new subscriber upgrade feature, working with our creative team, our agency, and our broader customer experience team to roll it out
  • Participated in our quarterly planning session, aligning on our cross-functional priorities for the next quarter
  • Jumped in to diagnose the cause of an error that’s causing a lot of discount codes to create errors, and reprioritized the team’s workload to deliver a quick fix.
  • Managed sprint kick-off meetings and slack standups to keep the team aligned and focused
  • Worn a unicorn mask and danced through the frame of our latest Facebook ad, shaking rolls of toilet paper on the way through. Oh, did we mention the confetti?
  • Kicked off a project to redesign our homepage
  • Led a cross-functional wireframing workshop to think through how new products the team is working on might affect our digital experience
  • Collaborated with our Head of Growth to revise our digital product dashboards, ensuring everyone has visibility into how the site is performing
  • Shared a few provocative articles about unique ways to rethink our customer experience to be more delightful and higher performing.
  • Drafted and reviewed the Digital Product team’s quarterly OKRs, getting feedback from your team and other teams.
  • Collaborated with our People & Culture team to create a roadmap for hiring additional development, design and product management roles over the next few quarters.
  • Spearheaded a project to rethink how we manage Gift Cards, getting your hands dirty and experimenting with new Shopify Apps and deciding which is the best for us.
  • Brainstormed ways to make one-click reordering possible with our Growth Marketing team, and reached out to our Shopify Account manager and other vendors to see what the best way to test it would be.
  • Led the development of a new “Give a Crap” button, a button that adds an extra dollar of donation to customers’ orders (while making a flushing sound, of course)

Let’s talk about you

You’re user-obsessed
You have an incredible intuition for what will make an amazing user experience, and you’re always looking for ways to surprise and delight. You easily walk in the shoes of your customer and experiment with every stage in their journey to ensure it’s optimised. You’re always on the lookout for places to hide delightful content or functionality, and you love to talk to our customers to get their feedback!

You’re not afraid to get dirty
We’ve got a small but mighty team right now, so you’ll be wearing all sorts of hats. You’ll be setting the strategy and prioritizing feature development, but you’ll also be in Google Analytics pulling reports, setting up new products in Shopify, configuring new apps, and testing the heck out of new features yourself. You’ll lead the growth of the team to support you, but you’re not afraid to be scrappy and get your hands dirty in the meantime!

You’re a total technophile
You know the latest in front end frameworks and know how to decide what cloud server we should be using to host our middleware. You probably have some experience in Shopify (although it’s OK if you don’t), and can think through the best solution to any tech problem we’re facing, whether it’s in the App Store or needs to be custom-built.

You’re a damn good driver
You’ve had plenty of experience defining and driving strategic roadmaps and you know how to steer everyone in the right direction. You are comfortable and skilled at leading a team and working cross-functionally to ensure everyone is engaged, effective and enjoying themselves. You can plan and lead sprints while still squashing bugs as they arise.

You think live outside of the box
You’re the best in the biz when it comes to innovation, optimisation and out-of-the-box thinking. You’ve tested and trialled some crazy ideas and will be able to think of unique ways to increase conversion, retention, revenue and delight.

You’re a Jack (or Jill!) of all trades
You love to think strategically whilst being tactical. You love data and you’ve got an eye for good design. You obsess over UX but you’re comfortable being scrappy. You speak developer-ese and designer-ese fluently. You get the gist.

You give a crap
Yep. We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too! Cue the warm fuzzies.

Why you should work with us

Every minute you spend working with us, you’re making a difference. The more we grow, the bigger an impact we’ll have. Sell your soul no longer! We think that’s a pretty great perk, but we don’t stop there…

If you have a great idea, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. This is the kind of role that will be hard to find anywhere else: you’ll work with an incredible bunch of passionate people to grow a fast-paced startup at a crucial point in its trajectory.

The job is also amazingly flexible, something we’re working hard to hold onto even as we grow super quickly. We started the business remotely, and now have hubs in 4 cities around the world with our LA base currently in DTLA. While the LA team spends most of the week together in the office, you can also mix it up and work in your PJs from home or set up office at the beach a couple of days a week! And while we don’t have a Friday drinks cart (yet), you will get free toilet paper. A lot of it. And nothing beats that.

Lastly, you get to say the word ‘crap’ more than in any other job. Guaranteed.

What you’ll get in return
The salary on offer depends on your experience but just because we’re a social enterprise doesn’t mean you’ll get paid peanuts. Think chocolate covered macadamia nuts with some extra perks thrown in. In other words, we pay competitively and are determined to make this the best job you'll ever have – you won’t ever want to leave!

We take our benefits pretty seriously and we’re really proud to offer 4 weeks of paid annual vacation (we even let it roll on, woot!), flexibility to work remotely for up to 3 month sof the year, 401(k) matching up to 4%, access to a generous health insurance scheme including dental and vision and a newly launched and very generous paid parental leave policy - just to name a few! Oh, and did we mention the free flowing toilet paper?
