THE PURPOSE:

As Director of Infrastructure at Virgin Hyperloop One, you will be the technical and strategic leader for our hyperloop infrastructure – from product research and development through building our first commercial projects. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team that’s designing and developing our hyperloop infrastructure, including the mainline vacuum structure (tube) and associated wayside facilities. THE ROLE:

  • People Management:
    • Recruit, mentor, coach, and motivate your team
    • Foster innovation to develop new products, improve existing products or services, and find alternate uses for our technology
    • Communicate proactively with stakeholders across engineering and corporate services to support safety, integration, testing, trade studies, supply chain, etc.
  • Technical Authority:
    • Accountable for developing infrastructure technical strategy, development roadmap, and design decisions aligned to overall engineering development strategy
    • Accountable for defining, designing, developing, integrating, qualifying, and certifying all infrastructure-related subsystems
    • Own the hardware design processes jointly with Director of Pod Engineering
    • Review and consult on design work for other engineering departments for system-level integrated performance against requirements
    • Provide engineering decision recommendations for items impacting wider system operation, software, manufacturing strategy, business requirements, or business strategy
    • Evaluate, develop, and implement technical policies, standards, processes, and procedures for improved efficiency and profitability
    • Identify new technical and business opportunities
    • Develop technical and industry knowledge
  • Supplier Management:
    • Lead strategic infrastructure design, manufacturing, and construction partnerships in line with our overall technical and commercial strategy
    • Accountable for subcontract work definition, progress, results, schedule, budget, and risk management
  • Project Management
  • Manage priorities, schedules, budgets, and quality
    • Identify, manage, and mitigate technical risk using the established Risk Management process
    • Other projects as assigned

 

THE CANDIDATE:

  • Strong technical proficiency and understanding of engineering first principles
  • Creative and innovative approach to solving problems
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiastic leader
  • Strategically-minded thinker and confident decision-maker
  • Highly self-motivated and eager to take on new challenges

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Experience managing teams and projects to deliver large, complex transportation infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience with non-traditional project delivery methodologies, including public-private partnerships
  • Strong understanding of the construction industry, including procurement methods, contract risk allocation, and project cost and schedule drivers

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • MS or PhD in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated experience with new and emerging materials, equipment, or processes in the heavy civil construction industry
  • Project Management Certification
