The Legal & Policy Team is Snap’s dedicated in-house law firm, policy consultant, lobbyist, thought partner, and all-around advisor. This team helps Snap do the right thing the right way, make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal. We partner with Snap team members on a wide array of matters, including privacy, product, IP, commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, acquisitions, litigation, and policy, and social impact. We’re looking for a Data Compliance Officer to join our Legal Team!
What you’ll do:
Take Snap’s privacy practices to the next level by developing an engineering-based data governance framework designed to scale with Snap’s growth.
Lead the initiatives to implement the framework and audit compliance with the framework.
Help Snap build out this new Data Compliance Officer function to establish the highest possible standards for engineering-based data governance frameworks.
Ensure compliance with legal and internal policy requirements related to data, including data lifecycle management, user data access and portability, and regionalization of data storage.
Develop organizational-level goals to drive the technical and organizational roadmap for adherence to core data governance and compliance requirements.
Develop a data governance and compliance framework including managing the objectives, approach, repeatable and scalable processes, policies and procedures to ensure enterprise-wide adherence to retention and deletion schedules.
Supervise compliance with the internal policy requirements, roadmaps, goals and frameworks outlined above, and advise on key decisions on architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions related to core data compliance requirements.
Find opportunities for process automation and technological solutions for data compliance management.
Work with Public Policy to communicate Snap’s data governance and compliance framework to key external partners, including policymakers and regulators.
Report to Snap’s Global Data Protection Officer, who also serves as Deputy General Counsel for Legal’s Privacy and Product team. Will be accountable to Snap’s CEO, CTO, SVP Engineering, and Snap’s board of directors for Snap’s adherence with Snap’s data compliance requirements, including data deletion and retention schedules, and data localization and regionalization schemes. Regularly present to the board of directors and its audit committee, including in closed sessions with independent directors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Previous experience working on large-scale data management projects with a focus on data integrity, protection and privacy
Creativity to help design and build out a new role that sets the world-leading standard for data compliance
Previous experience of working autonomously across multiple departments
Ability to deliver independent findings and implement them to drive improvements and, sometimes, change
Track record of delivery in constantly evolving, highly collaborative, multi-site, multi-stakeholder environments
Deep knowledge of and experience working with a diverse group of engineers
Someone who loves to learn, and is passionate about helping others and finding better ways to get things done
A working familiarity with and a willingness to embrace cutting-edge technological solutions to privacy problems (end-to-end encryption, differential privacy, and more)
Ability to exercise authority, but does so by influence and partnership as much as possible
Experience with mobile apps development
Experience with UI, API and Data platforms
Experience meeting with external partners
Strong understanding of compliance and IT auditing
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA or higher, preferably in a technical field such as Computer Science or proven equivalent experience
8+ years of technical program management and/or privacy engineering experience and/or compliance monitoring/auditing experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Legal training or certifications in data protection a plus
