Team and Role Overview

The Legal team identifies and manages risk across Relativity while facilitating its rapid growth. The counsel/compliance role will lead and shape the compliance program to ensure that Relativity and its employees comply with U.S. national security and international trade laws and government contracting obligations. This individual will be a thought partner across functions and have tremendous impact in their role. This role reports to the General Counsel, based in LA but willing to consider DC.

In your role, you will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing Relativity’s processes, procedures and programs as they relate to domestic and international regulatory matters, including:
    • Ensuring compliance with ITAR, EAR, FCPA, OFAC, CFIUS, supply chain and import orders and other applicable regulations, including conducting compliance audits;
    • Structuring internal processes and safeguards for storing and handling information and materials subject to export controls and classified federal government information;
    • Keeping accurate logs and records needed to document and track compliance;
    • Providing frequent trainings and education to various members of the organization on compliance and identification of technical information subject to national security and/or trade compliance laws;
    • Ensuring compliance with FARS/DFARS via cross-functional partnership within Relativity;
    • Creating and managing regulatory filings and submissions;
    • Handling foreign visitor requests and ensuring materials subject to export control are put away during office visits;
  • Serving as export control officer;
  • Performing regulatory analysis to determine appropriate classification of hardware, software and data;
  • Drafting and managing applications for export licenses and agreements, including Technical Assistance Agreements and other necessary licenses and paperwork to ensure compliance;
  • Working closely with engineering, purchasing and sales teams to review contracts and manage relationships with Relativity’s business partners, vendors, and customers to ensure compliance with regulations;
  • Working with security and safety team to ensure continued protection of property from outside intrusion;
  • Working with InfoSec to ensure state of the art cybersecurity protection as it relates to ITAR-controlled data.
  • Interfacing with governmental parties on matters relating to the above;
  • Keeping current on changing regulations and interpreting and advising on the same; and
  • Performing due diligence/vetting on any potential foreign parties with which Relativity may interact.
  • Some travel to our other locations will be required.

The Mission/Outcomes and Objectives

Relativity is building humanity’s multiplanetary future! We’ve invented a new approach to design, build, and fly our own rockets, starting with Terran 1 – the world’s first entirely 3D printed rocket.  To help Relativity achieve our mission, we need to make sure that we continue to protect our technology and remain in compliance with national and international regulations.  You will be responsible for building and enhancing internal safeguards and ensuring that protection. You will work closely with the engineering, sales teams, security, government affairs, finance and InfoSec teams in doing so.

Candidate Profile

The candidate thrives in high-growth organizations and can handle rapidly shifting priorities with patience and flexibility. They are confident in enforcing compliance across the organization and patient with employees who require education on regulatory compliance.

Minimum Required Skills and Competencies

  • 5+ years of experience with U.S. national security and international trade laws and compliance with same;
  • Experience drafting and managing TAAs and other applications for export licenses and agreements;
  • Experience working in the space, aerospace or defense industries;
  • Ability to provide practical, strategic and business-oriented legal advice;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple time sensitive tasks.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with FARS/DFARS;
  • Top secret clearance;
  • D. degree from an accredited law school and admitted to California bar or at least one other U.S. state bar with the ability to become Registered In-House Counsel;
  • Experience as regulatory counsel in corporate, government or law firm environment;
  • Experience with encryption regulations; and
  • Experience with government contracting and government relations.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a United States Person as defined by 22 C.F.R.  § 120.15 is required.
