OUTER'S MISSION 

Outer is a venture-backed startup based in Santa Monica, California on a mission to get people outside and inspire healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives by creating innovative outdoor furniture.

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will help build our finance function and work to implement greater financial rigor and process across the company. You’ll own the entire accounting function at Outer, defining the company’s policies and procedures and building out a team. You will manage the company’s financial operating system and ensure compliance with regulations and best practices. As the person responsible for the company’s financial statements, you will be a key part of telling Outer’s story and essential to driving its growth. 

To succeed in this role, you must have a successful track record of selecting and implementing accounting software and integrating that within the greater organization. You will contribute variance analysis of bookings, revenues, and expenses, clearly explaining the business reasons for variances and adjusting the outlook models to reflect operational adjustments.

Given the stage of Outer and the ever-evolving business strategy and needs of the company, this role will change over time. New and exciting opportunities arise every day and we are looking for candidates who will embrace and be motivated by that flexibility.  

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Own and direct the company’s entire accounting operations, including establishing and enforcing policies, procedures, and controls
• Lead month-end close process and financial statement review, contributing insights and recommendations as part of variance analysis
• Investigate reporting discrepancies / anomalies and communicate issues as they arise in a timely manner
• Continually develop, expand and improve month end close and financial reporting procedures
• Partner with FP&A team during the planning and budgeting process
• Evaluate and implement systems to improve the company’s financial operations
• Manage 3rd party vendor and contractor payment schedules, administrative policies, and tax reporting
• Support the year-end financial statement audit. Work directly with auditors to ensure a smooth and timely process

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• CPA preferred with minimum 9+ years’ relevant experience (public / private split)
• Inventory management experience

SKILLS, REQUIREMENTS, & ABILITIES

• Proven track record of success with establishing, managing, and evolving accounting policies and procedures in early stage, high growth companies
• Previous experience directly overseeing the implementation of a new or replacement ERP system
• Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to work cross-functionally, and a knack for presenting financial information in a way that others can understand easily
• Highly analytical and detail-oriented, with a strong sense of ownership
• Experience with Quickbooks, NetSuite, Bill.com, and/or Expensify
