THE PURPOSE:

The Vehicle Dynamics Engineer falls under the Verification and Validation and Analysis group within the Systems Division at Virgin Hyperloop One, and is part of a team responsible for modeling and analyzing the pod vehicle’s dynamics, loads, and performance. As part of the dynamics team, you will work closely with peers in the hardware project teams to develop dynamics models, and test and validate the vehicle’s design. The team will be responsible for the generation of engineering and load data for downstream activities on the vehicle structural design and optimization as well as studying the vehicle’s performance in power consumption and rider comfort quality. Participation is expected in design reviews, product benchmarking, and overall system optimization studies.

THE ROLE:

• Provide hardware teams vehicle performance data such as design loads, recommend structural stiffness requirements, estimates on power consumption, and passenger comfort
• Develop dynamics-related engineering data to aid in vehicle design topology trade studies
• Work across different disciplines such as aerodynamics, propulsion, and levitation teams to model forcing functions on the vehicle and controller implementation
• Develop in-house tools and utilize commercial CAE tools as needed to provide vehicle dynamics and loads engineering data to design teams, and investigate vehicle and track structural dynamics interactions
• Practices quality control in code development through unit testing and code documentation
• Make recommendations on test plan for the verification and validation of dynamic models, forcing functions, and load, and advise in software purchases
• Maintain loads database and facilitate loads development for each major design cycle

THE CANDIDATE:

• Enjoys developing efficient and novel solutions to challenging engineering problems
• Has exceptional interpersonal skills and can work collaboratively with many other teams
• Has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to create concise, thorough documentation that can be used to further the knowledge base of the company
• Can work quickly and efficiently on a tight schedule with little technical or managerial guidance
• Is comfortable sharing knowledge and technical expertise within the dynamics team, and teaching knowledge and findings to the larger engineering group

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or similar field
  • Experience in developing dynamics simulation and knowledge in:
    • Time domain and frequency domain (harmonic, PSD) analyses
    • Developing in-house dynamics simulation codes in MATLAB, or similar
    • Utilizing commercial FEA or multibody dynamics simulation tools to study structural dynamics or rigid multi-body dynamics
  • Experience in transportation or aerospace vehicle structural loads development and has knowledge in one or more of the following:
    • Developing and exporting FEA models to be used in dynamics analyses
    • Modal analysis, component-mode synthesis, internal loads recovery methodologies of reduced-order models (Mode Acceleration, Mode Displacement techniques)
    • Generating loads combinations for strength and fatigue structural integrity assessment
    • System identification of dynamic systems

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • MS or PhD in Engineering, or related industry experience
  • Working in a startup environment or working in the early stages of an engineering company; working to create or mature engineering processes
  • Dynamic loads development throughout full stage of vehicle product development
  • Developing purpose built dynamic simulations in MATLAB
  • Analyzing integrated multi-physics system performance
  • Structural dynamics and nonlinear multibody dynamics
  • Experience in verification and validation of dynamic models, forcing functions, and design loads towards vehicle certification
  • Development of modal or dynamic test campaigns
  • Developing models in one or more of the following CAE software packages: Femap, Nastran, ANSYS, Simcenter NX Motion, Simcenter Response Dynamics, LMS Virtual Lab, MSC ADAMS, or Simulia
