The Boeing Defense, Space and Security, In-Space Vehicles is seeking a Senior Structure and Payload Design Engineer (Level 5) to join our Space Structures Engineering Team.  Our engineering team will support the structural and payload system requirements for our commercial and government satellites.  Collectively, we engage our customers and teammates to deliver superior payload design solutions coupled with flawless detail and assembly engineering that reaffirms Boeing's resounding leadership.  Candidate will be a part of a high-performing team who are excited to redefine satellite architecture and produce the future of communications satellites in the great city of El Segundo, CA. 

Position Overview:

The Space Structures team provides engineering support on a variety of In-Space Vehicles products.  This position offers the opportunity to be hands-on with primary structures system design for satellite product lines, including platform structures, payload structures, and antenna structures.  Ideal candidate should have a background in structure and payload designs in space applications. 

This is not a union represented position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Defines mechanical, structural, environmental design and integration requirements for the S/C and its constituent assemblies and components including both flight and non-flight (GSE) hardware.
  • Leads team to define the spacecraft drawing/model tree and assignment, general arrangement drawing/model, and all Interface Control Dwg/Models including but not limited to Moving Mechanical Assemblies (MMAs).
  • Defines and maintains drawing/modeling requirements, standards and flow-down.
  • Designs standards required for design-analysis integrated models.
  • Supports and approves of manufacturing and integration plan, Digital Mock-Up (DMU) and Virtual Manufacturing (VM) simulation reviews.
  • Defines mechanical design trade space and closure criteria.
  • Leads, supports, and approves design reviews, test plans and procedures, critical planning procedures for space structures.
  • Defines and executes on CCCP (Critical Clearance Control Plan) including definition and verification of CCCL (Critical Clearance Control List activities
  • Assists in creating plans, schedules, and procedures for tests of structural components and systems. Supports testing (e.g. environmental simulations, functional and qualification tests). Assists in evaluating test data to validate components and systems against design requirements and objectives.
  • Leads design team to develop, maintain and modify structures/payload system and component designs, using 3-D Computer Aided Design tools (Creo-Parametric, NASTRAN/PATRAN), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T – ASME Y14.5M) standards and/or other design methods, to drive product definition with other engineering groups throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Performs design studies to obtain a structure configuration that packages to given requirements, either stated or derived, while considering such items as envelope constraints, deployed vs. stowed configurations, and field of views.
  • Works with other engineering organizations to gather requirements needed to drive the design to completion for non-recurring projects as Responsible Engineering Authority.  This includes solving issues along the value stream while in production through spacecraft integration and test.
  • Assists with investigation of emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements.
  • Assists in supporting proposal preparation and new business development efforts in order to grow the business. Tasks include: work statement estimates (e.g., cost, schedule, task breakdown) and marketing support. Adheres to all bid and proposal policies and procedures.

This position requires the ability post-start to obtain U.S. Security Clearance post start, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):  

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry from an ABET accredited program.
  • 10 years or more experience working with space structures.
  • Experience working with cross functioning teams on design requirements.
  • Experience using excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with leaders and colleagues in an engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills and Experience):

  • Degree in mechanical, civil, aerospace, or architectural engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. Basic relocation is available for internal candidates.
