As a Senior Software Engineer you’ll be responsible for maintaining and improving our core websites, improving our content management system and will help design our upcoming initiatives. Our ideal candidate is someone who has an eye for design and detail, well versed in software engineering for the web, and someone who is comfortable with large codebases. Above all, we’re looking for a team player, with experience (or interest) in the publishing industry. 

We’re not your average engineering team. We’re a small, tight-knit group and work cross functionally to directly improve our business as we reach millions of real users and support hundreds of staff. We have a tidy, modern technical stack with few legacy applications and have a mature, pragmatic engineering and product team with experienced technical leaders. For you, this means real-world hands-on experience with a popular website, in an environment where your career can flourish.

This is a remote-based role that can be based in either California or Oregon and reports to the Director of Engineering. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and improve our core websites
  • Maintain and improve our internal content management system
  • Design and build upcoming initiatives
  • Plan site and front end technology upgrades
  • Mentor other team members and regularly share what you're learning

  • We like our vacations! Documentation, comments, clean/well tested code, and overall great communication is essential
  • We love experimenting and tinkering with technology, but are very careful before putting new things into production
  • Our stack is roughly Go, Unix/Linux, Google Cloud, MySQL, ES6+/React/Redux

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of professional experience with expertise in front-end work: JavaScript (React/Redux or similar)/HTML/CSS 
  • Solid computer science foundation and history of building complex systems including automated testing and version control 
  • Understanding of back end and database systems with preference for the front end
  • Collaborative, proactive, and creative problem solving abilities
  • Preferred: extensive knowledge of web systems including large scale/ high availability, CDNs, static asset versioning and delivery, etc
  • Preferred: Deep understanding of website optimization: Lighthouse, Google search console, etc.
