Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

Relativity seeks a highly talented Components Engineer to join a rapidly growing space startup. This role falls under the Turbomachinery & Components team. We are responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing turbopumps, valves, and dynamic components for the Aeon-1 and Aeon-R engines. Our mission is to change people’s conception of the way rockets are built and flown. This position will provide outstanding contribution to the development of the Terran 1 and Terran R launch vehicles, as well as helping to build a world-class team. A high degree of autonomy and initiative is required.

What you'll do:

As Components Engineer, you will own and develop clean-sheet in-house designs of propulsion valves for the Aeon-R engine. In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is able to drive their own projects to completion. You have the passion, tenacity and resolve to work through challenging issues unique to propulsion components. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast paced, aerospace environment, having completed difficult projects while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary groups.

More specifically, we are looking for:

  • Someone with demonstrated success developing clean-sheet propulsion valves.
  • Someone with a strong design background and a demonstrated ability work with manufacturing engineers to ensure our valves meet all aspects of the intended design, with a focus towards manufacturability and integration.
  • Someone who understands CNC machining, dimensional inspection, and testing procedures, and can collaborate with stakeholders to minimize processing times.
  • Someone with experience building strong teams and leading projects, directly and cross-functionally.

What you need to know:

  • Degree in engineering or related technical field and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully developing propulsion components with cradle-to-grave ownership.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Ability to perform structural and CFD analysis using ANSYS or comparable software.
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to write work instructions and process plans
  • Experience testing propulsion valves using in-house resources.
  • Experience with flight termination system testing for propulsion valves, including shock and vibration.
  • Knowledge of valve assembly procedures, including press fits, clearance checks, structural proofing, and leak checks
  • Knowledge of powder-bed additive manufacturing

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Degree in engineering or related technical field and 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience leading a small integrated team
  • Experience in a startup or agile development environment
  • Experience working in a flight development program

An Insider's view of Relativity Space

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

It's actually a balance (wild!). I get to make sweet hardware with smart people, and still have the ability to propel my art on the side. I love that there's flexibility in being able to work from home when I'm not in the factory building rockets.

Ashley

Lead Avionics Mechanical Engineer

What projects are you most excited about?

First and foremost, launching Terran 1 is incredibly exciting. Launching rockets is exciting enough, but launching rockets built with an entirely new manufacturing method is bananas! It’s pretty amazing to be a part of this historical human milestone.

Tarek

Lead, Structures Engineering

What is your vision for the company?

We are creating an entirely re-imagined process to iterate and scale rockets quickly, eventually helping to build the future of humanity in space.

Tim

CEO and Co-Founder

What does your typical day look like?

Everyday is an adventure to unlock newer and newer capabilities. Developing the technology to 3D print rockets has entailed regularly solving novel problems. The resulting solutions from working with such a diversely experienced team always stretch my understanding of what's possible, and reward us with new avenues for the innovations of tomorrow.
