The Launch Operations Division (LOD) provides technical support to the Space and Missile Systems Center’s (SMC) Launch Enterprise Directorate (ECL) providing independent launch readiness verification in support of National Security Space (NSS) missions to be launched on the Atlas V and Delta IV launch systems. In addition, the Division provides technical support to the design certification and operation of the Vulcan launch system.
Responsibilities
The Project Engineer in the Systems Analysis group within LOD will provide technical, systems engineering, and programmatic leadership in the Flight Environments areas, focusing on aerothermodynamics, thermal and contamination for the Atlas V, Delta IV and Vulcan launch vehicle systems. The selected candidate will also work with the Aerospace Engineering and Technology Group (ETG), the government customer and the contractor and will be responsible for identifying technical and certification-related issues/risks and executing and closing tasks.
Key Functions
- Technical evaluation and coordination of recurring and non-recurring analyses and reports
- Task planning and budget management
- Lead and facilitate collaborative efforts with Government customers and contractors
- Management of launch verification efforts for Flight Environments
- Coordination of analysis activities with ETG and the launch vehicle contractor
- Build and maintain close working relationships with the Aerospace team, customer counterparts, and contractor responsible engineers
- Form and lead multi-discipline teams
- Mentoring of new Air Force Officers to help them gain familiarity with technical processes and tasks associated with Flight Environments
- Effectively communicate status and progress of technical activities, issues, and accomplishments through written reports and presentations to Aerospace, Government customer and contractor teams
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor of Science Degree in aerospace engineering or related technical discipline from a recognized institution
- Eight (8) or more years relevant experience with increasing responsibility
- Experience in aerothermodynamics and thermal analysis for Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicle systems
- Experience with National Security Space launch systems and operations
- Knowledge and experience with National Security Space Launch Verification Matrix
- Experience with systems engineering and verification of requirements
- Experience coordinating and/or participating in multi-disciplinary technical team efforts
- Experience working in Program Office (preferably Launch Vehicle)
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills
- Mentoring and/or training of peers and/or customers (e.g., technical disciplines, day of launch on-console support, etc.)
- Ability to work effectively across organizations
- Can interface effectively with senior Aerospace management, Space Force, and contractor counterparts
- Ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relations is essential
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to present clear, concise briefings
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and forge well-founded technical recommendations
- Ability to balance technical and programmatic perspectives
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
Preferred
- Advanced degree in mechanical engineering / fluid mechanics or related technical discipline from a recognized institution
- Knowledge and experience with Aerospace Space Launch Readiness Verification process
- Ability to obtain/maintain Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
