As a Principal/Lead Software Engineer on our Core Application team, you will help deliver an exceptional product experience to our customers all around the world. This could be for hotel guests, creating a user experience that makes travelers feel welcome, comfortable, and inspired to share the joy of travel with others. Or it could be for our accommodation users, providing simple, easy-to-use tools to support the many tasks our users do on a daily basis.

Our development strategy is to deliver cross-platform products (iOS, Android, Web, and Desktop) using a single codebase. For the Principal Engineering role, we are looking for someone who can think and communicate architecturally and has worked with a broad range of patterns, practices, libraries, and frameworks. You will participate in strategic decisions regarding the use of libraries and tools. You will assist with architectural design, exploratory programming, and the design of reusable and composable react components and business logic.

Location: Remote - US/CA

What You Will Do: 

  • Participate as a member of an agile engineering team, contributing to our application codebase on a daily basis.
  • Support and mentor junior and senior developers in growing their knowledge and skillsets
  • Implement features and improvements in PHP, Java, and Python
  • Help lead discussions on complex technical concepts and requirements
    with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Write clean, well-tested, well-documented, and elegant code
  • Work with other engineers in planning, prioritizing, and executing assigned tasks within deadlines
  • Assist in researching new technologies to ensure quality and productivity
  • Create tech design documents to effectively collaborate with peers on complex features

You’ll Succeed With: 

  • 5+ years of PHP web application software engineering experience
  • 5+ years of experience with Java and event-driven microservices
  • 3+ years experience in one or more modern PHP frameworks (Laravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter)
  • 3+ years experience being a technology leader within the organization
  • 3+ years experience working with relational databases, with a focus on tuning and optimization, experience with Aurora or MySQL is preferred.
  • A strong business sense and ability to collaborate with leadership and non-technical stakeholders on highly visible projects
  • Dedication towards observability by leveraging metrics, experiments, and prototypes to ensure decisions are data-driven. 
  • Experience in Java and microservice architectures 
  • Strong knowledge and a passion for software best practices, design patterns, and testing
  • Strong teamwork, leadership, and time management skills
  • Passionate about agile practices and continuous improvement
  • Business-level English fluency required (verbal and written skills)

Nice to Have: 

  • Experience working with a remote-first and globally-distributed team
  • Travel industry experience is a plus but definitely not required!
  • Experience with gRPC
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling, including Github Actions and Workflows
  • Experience with monorepo tooling, including Yarn Workspaces, Lerna,
    Nx, and Verdaccio
