THE PURPOSE:

The Power Electronics division is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing the electrical power components in the Hyperloop system. These components include variable frequency drives for propulsion and levitation, energy storage systems, charging systems, wiring and cable assemblies, and the associated control hardware and control algorithms. We are seeking a Power Electronics Engineer at our Los Angeles facility to join our diverse, experienced team in designing power electronics and battery systems for one of the most challenging transportation applications on Earth.

THE ROLE:

The Power Electronics Engineer will be responsible for (at both component and assembly level) advanced circuit design/analysis, failure mode analysis, fault management, reliability and product life time.

Specifically, the roles and responsibilities include:

  • Gate drive circuit design, LVPS circuit design and worst-case circuit analysis
  • PCB and assembly-level noise analysis, simulation, and preventive measure design, build, and verification test (to prevent power switches from false triggering)
  • PCB and assembly-level fault management, including:
    • Fault protection strategies (HV bus over voltage and under voltage; short circuit at source and load side)
    • Design, build, and test verification for each of intended fault protection functions
    • (Specifically) Design, build, and test verification of Rogowski coil current sensing for SiC module direct shoot through fault protect
  • Failure Mode Effect and Analysis (MFEA), product reliability analysis and product life time estimation
  • Troubleshooting failures during engineering development and field tests

THE CANDIDATE:

The candidate shall possess the following characteristics:

  • Experiences in developing a product from concept to production
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and meet challenging deadlines

  • Hands-on experience with gate driver and IGBT testing
  • Hands-on experience with various analytical and simulation tools (Matlab/Simulink, Mathcad, SPICE)
  • Solid knowledge of power converter components, e.g., IGBTs, capacitors, magnetics, busbars, sensors
  • Solid experience in working in a high-voltage and high-power engineering lab environment
  • Solid experience in using high-voltage and high-power test related equipment and instruments

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field and 5 years of experience in a power electronics-related role
  • Labview, Python, and Matlab or other related software for data acquisition and analysis
  • High-voltage power stage test setup design, implementation and validation
  • Experience with power converter tests with inductive load
  • Experience with variable speed drive tests
