Mechanical Design Engineer
Counter UAS is a technology growing area of intense interest from defense and commercial customers alike, especially with the increasing ubiquity of cost-effective drone technology. Anduril is quickly developing and deploying the most effective end-to-end counter drone system available, using the best of off-the shelf technologies paired with innovative new software and sensors.
As an early member of this small cross-functional team, you will tackle the design, prototyping, manufacture, and deployment of next generation flight systems and peripherals for Anduril's CUAS platform Anvil and related products. This suite of challenges includes sensor and compute integration, flight propulsion, high-power batteries, target engagement devices, and ground support equipment like launchers and chargers.
Responsibilities
- Leading projects with an expected scope of 2 weeks to 2 months. Responsible for design and execution of said projects with a high degree of independence.
- Designing mechanical parts and assemblies for a variety of applications, including ground structure, drones, electronics enclosures, cooling systems, etc.
- Using first principles and multidisciplinary analysis methods to validate designs both before and during production.
- Building prototypes, analyzing failures, and assisting with transitioning projects to production.
Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in Mechanical Design
- Previous experience working on both prototype projects and production projects is absolutely required. Preferred: experience taking a project all the way from conceptual design through production.
- Excellent problem-solving ability. Must be capable of conducting a general background investigation on a new project, identifying multiple potential paths forward, and developing a plan for executing the project.
- Excellent CAD skills. Solidworks or CATIA strongly preferred. Capable of appreciating the difference between production modeling approaches and prototype or “throw away” modeling approaches.
- Ability to perform simple hand-calc (closed form) analysis in structural, thermal, and electrical domains. Deep expertise in these areas is not required, but candidate should be able to (for example) perform gross sizing on a heat exchanger, verify that a cantilevered beam with basic cross-section can support the necessary load, size a bus bar, etc.
- Ability to create standards-compliant mechanical drawings of parts and assemblies with no oversight. Drawings should be of a high-enough quality that they can be used by suppliers to generate manufacturing quotes.
- Experience designing parts for multiple manufacturing techniques. Experience with machining, sheet metal, injection molding, and 3D printing is required. Experience with other molding processes, sand casting, or die casting is desired.
- Ability to integrate electronic components into mechanical designs. Capable of selecting motors, controllers, sensors etc. Not required to be able to program for these items or design PCBs or control circuits. Must have enough familiarity with mechatronic components to work effectively with an electrical engineer on integration of these components.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access U.S. only data systems and export controlled data.
