THE PURPOSE:

The Manager of Vehicle Controls will be part of the Machine Intelligence & Analytics Department, and the greater Software Engineering Products Function. The Algorithms Team will be responsible for key algorithms driving the autonomous behavior of vehicles within the Virgin Hyperloop One transportation system, including: motion planning, state space representation & controls, localization, sensor fusion, tracking, and onboard decision making and procedure following. The Algorithms Team will work closely with the rest of the Machine Intelligence & Analytics department to build up core mathematical frameworks, libraries, and toolchains. Additionally, the Algorithms Team will work with and act as an interface to the Embedded Software and Embedded Compute Departments, ensuring developed algorithms are well matched to compute, control, and sensor systems onboard the Hyperloop One vehicle.

Ultimately, we will design reliable, scalable, real-time (or near-real time) applications that make Virgin Hyperloop One a reality. We are seeking candidates with various levels of experience to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals at our Los Angeles facility.

THE ROLE:

  • Lead the planning, creation, development, technical direction, and vision for autonomous capabilities onboard the Virgin Hyperloop One vehicle.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to technical staff as well as upper management.
  • Drive development of software algorithms in vehicle dynamics modeling, controls, motion planning, localization, sensor fusion, tracking, and onboard decision making to be delivered as part of on-vehicle software.
  • Develop test and verification procedures, experimental test systems, data acquisition systems, and analysis to certify performance of algorithms.
  • Work with Business Strategy to connect operating procedures and business objectives.
  • Work with Test & Development to collect, catalog, and analyze test data.
  • Keep a customer focused mindset, prioritizing developer productivity and application uptime.
  • Champion processes and procedures across the organization. 
  • Communicate, present, and defend opinions concerning physical and logical architecture in a productive and diplomatic fashion.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • Experience with common software tools and platforms for development of real-time, fault tolerant systems.
  • Understanding of transportation systems and operations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to conduct research into issues and products as required. 
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language and visuals. 
  • Highly self-motivated and directed. 
  • Keen attention to detail. 
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Working proficiency and excellent communication skills in verbal and written English.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • MS/PhD Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent field. 
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership position.
  • Experience managing teams to ensure delivery of onboard intelligent capabilities to vehicle software products.
  • Solid successful industry experience in developing software solutions.
  • Technical depth and breadth in fields of control systems, software engineering, real-time systems, vehicle management systems, and fault tolerant systems.
  • Excellent foundation in theoretical aspects of control theory, information theory, state estimation, linear algebra, statistics, differential equations, etc.
  • Strong software engineering and algorithm development abilities.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated management success and experience with small, high functioning teams.
  • Experience delivering avionics or other safety critical software products.
  • Experience in the aerospace or automotive industries.
  • Understanding of transportation systems and operations.
  • Experience with test and simulation environments.
  • Ability to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Domain expertise and knowledge of transportation, logistics, and autonomous systems.
