Manager, Vehicle Conceptual Design Section

The Manager (El Segundo) will work with the Director (El Segundo) and Associate Director (Chantilly) of the Vehicle Design and Innovation Department (VDID) to develop customer relationships; develop, grow, manage, and perform work; and hire and mentor staff in El Segundo to support VDID and ADS activities. The Manager is responsible for the management and technical direction of the Vehicle Conceptual Design Section of VDID. This section conducts conceptual design studies of space systems, evaluates proposed or existing space system designs, and develops tools and models. The Manager will participate in the hiring, training, and career development of the MTS in the section, as well as participate in design activities that require interaction with program office and contractor personnel. As a member of the department management team, the Manager will help guide the department’s vision and direction, identify opportunities that bring work into the department, and work with the subdivision management team.
Key Functions
Initiate, manage, and recommend personnel staffing requests (hiring, promoting, etc.)
Mentor section staff both in technical and career growth
Assign section staff with specific tasking as necessary
Lead and participate in multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the development and analysis of space vehicles
Lead and participate in conceptual and preliminary design studies of space systems
Evaluate spacecraft design and architecture concepts
Participate in design reviews
Provide vehicle systems engineering support in the execution of customer programs
Work with government and program office personnel and members of ETG
Develop tools and models that support spacecraft design and analysis activities
Qualifications
Required
BS degree in a relevant engineering discipline, science, or a related field
Typically 5 years’ experience in space systems design with a good knowledge of spacecraft subsystems and system engineering
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adapt quickly to change, and demonstrate initiative under pressure
Demonstrated ability to work on a wide variety of spacecraft systems engineering tasks from concept development to launch
Experience in developing, leading, and working on multi-disciplinary engineering teams
Demonstrated experience in concurrent engineering tools, processes, and methodologies
Demonstrated technical spacecraft analysis and design support for feasibility studies, architecture analysis, and business case assessments
Strong interpersonal and communications skills
Strong, demonstrated personal initiative
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
Preferred
Advanced degree in a related STEM field
Extensive use of MS Office and other computer applications, especially in support of space vehicle design and analysis
Rapid prototyping experience
Experience with CubeSats and working with iLab and xLab
Current TS/SSBI clearance
