System1 is looking for a Lead Software Engineer for our Serving and Services team. You will design, build, operate, debug, optimize, and deploy highly-distributed and low-latency web-based systems with a growing team of talented engineers. In this role, you will be responsible for managing massive datasets to extract valuable insights from user behavior. The ideal person will not only be an expert software developer with back-end and some full stack knowledge, but also a collaborative team player with infectious energy and a desire to communicate ideas with colleagues.

The Role You Will Have

Lead the development of System1’s main ad serving platform - this platform is used by a diverse group of users servicing both internal and externally facing products
Build, operate, and optimize large web-based systems and platforms that interface directly with real-time scoring models and support various optimization algorithms that are multi-objective in nature
Design and implement algorithms to efficiently process, analyze, and serve massive datasets
Serve as a key individual contributor within the Venice engineering group and provide technical leadership to the team
Take projects through the full engineering lifecycle: designing, ticketing, building, testing, deploying, and debugging tools and products
Work with a tight knit group of engineers and data stakeholders

What You Will Bring

Demonstrated experience in back-end or full stack development in a senior level role
Well versed with Python and Python libraries/frameworks is required
Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and guide a driven team of talented engineers - prior experience leading projects with at least 2+ engineers a must
Passion for leveraging technology to solve problems and maximize productivity
Should be comfortable writing HTML/CSS and be proficient in Javascript
Experience building scalable and reliable products in the cloud
Experience with designing, implementing, and using RESTful APIs
Ability to execute ideas and influence decision making in a clear and effective manner
Exposure to ad serving systems and reliability requirements
Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment

Mattick recently took a course through Coursera on machine learning, and the timing could not have been better. He was able to balance his work at System1 with assignments and studying, and now, he’s implementing what he learned on the job. Currently, he and the data science team are working on an algorithm to optimize System1’s advertising on a new network. Their custom-built machine learning infrastructure makes it easy to deploy new algorithms and track performance.

Because our infrastructure is built for our needs, we are able to iterate, make more complex models and adapt to future requests quickly. It’s very rewarding!
