Want to challenge yourself at a high-growth startup AND make a difference in the world?

A bit about us:

Who Gives A Crap makes toilet paper that’s good for the planet, good for people and good for your bum. All of our products are made sustainably without trees and we donate 50% of profits to help build toilets in developing countries. To date, we've donated over $1,300,000 and we're just getting started!

We're one of the fastest growing ecommerce businesses in Australia, and are now aggressively entering the North American and European markets, with insanely ambitious growth targets for this year and beyond. We currently have a team of about 60 people working out of “hubs” Melbourne, Manilla, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. We’re never happy with the status quo, though, so we’re planning to double or triple our team in the next year, and we won’t stop growing until everyone in the world has access to a toilet. So... that’s where you come in!

A bit about the role:

As our Lead Full Stack Engineer, you’ll be taking ownership of our architecture and codebase, technical implementation and execution, and help us develop a technical platform strategy that would make Google think twice about getting into the TP market. You’ll help us measure performance (both digital experiences and team) and find new ways to test creative ideas. You’ll build innovative technology solutions that intersect the physical and digital world and leverage the latest and greatest technical thinking to bring delight to our customers and massive impact to the world.

You’ll report directly to the Head of Digital Product and help build and scale a team of engineers. You’ll represent technology to the organization and work cross-functionally with our Creative, Logistics, and CX teams to constantly iterate our experiences and find new areas of opportunity. From artificial intelligence and machine learning to augmented and virtual reality, if you can dream it, we will help you build it. We’re about much more than just toilet paper and you are more than an amazing engineer. If you want to do the best work of your career, collaborate with a global team, make the world a better place (and have fun doing it) - you’ve come to the right place!

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

  • You understand the benefit of out of the box solutions and evaluated one that would create a better experience for our subscriptions but decided, “Nah, I got this.” and built it yourself this time, then integrated it with our Shopify platform.

  • Found a new approach for address validation and rolled it out reducing CX tickets to such a degree that our entire Manila hub gave you a group high-five (they are amazing at high-fives).

  • Joined the LA hub in the Who Gives a Crap company-wide karaoke “battle royale” choreographing your team’s dance moves with flawless skill and artful craftsmanship.

  • Picked your own tools, teams, and process for deploying and testing code.

  • Collaborated on our 5-year vision, defining key moments for technology to solve user/business goals (spoiler alert: you’ll still get to do this).

  • Led a brainstorm / hackathon to find new and exciting ways for our returning customers to reorder through personalized technology.

  • Went snorkeling and ate lunch with your team on the white sand beaches of the Philippines.

  • Worked with our Growth team to define the approach and technical architecture of a data warehouse and reporting solution.

  • Thought about how cool it would be to build an app for our customers and then went ahead and launched a test of it only to receiving glowing praise from our customers. Or maybe it went down like a ton of bricks? Either way, it was an epic learning.

Let’s talk about you

You’re user-obsessed
You have an incredible intuition for anticipating customer issues and you’re always looking for ways to reduce friction for internal and external users. But you don’t settle for “good”, you’re always on the lookout for places to hide truly delightful content or functionality.

You’re a total technophile
You know the latest in front end frameworks and know how to decide what cloud services we should be using to host and to scale our experience. You definitely have strong experience with one or more ecommerce platforms (ideally Shopify but let’s still talk if it’s Magento or something else), and you understand and can assess the trade-offs of custom vs. out of the box approaches.

This ain’t your first rodeo
You’ve launched, iterated, and scaled multiple digital products; and enhanced and improved inherited code bases managing to throw out the bathwater, not the baby. You’ve also had your hands in release processes and deployment management. All of this as an individual contributor and as a leader. Yeehaw!

You’re a roll model (pun intended)
You care deeply about the people you work with, and it shows. We’re looking to you to help us grow our tech team in more ways than one. You’re known to lead by example and promote an environment of experimentation and a thirst for learning.

You’re a Jack (or Jill!) of all trades
You love to think strategically whilst being tactical. You really love code but you’ve also got an eye for good design. You obsess over delightful UX but you’re comfortable being scrappy. You speak developer-ese and designer-ese fluently. You get the gist.

You give a crap
Yep. We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too! Awwww.

Why you should work with us

Every minute you spend working with us, you’re making a difference. The more we grow, the bigger an impact we’ll have. Sell your soul no longer! We think that’s a pretty great perk, but we don’t stop there…

If you have a great idea, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. This is the kind of role that will be hard to find anywhere else: you’ll work with an incredible bunch of passionate people to grow a fast-paced startup at a crucial point in its trajectory.

The job is also super flexible, something we’re working hard to hold onto even as we grow really quickly. We started the business remotely, and now have hubs in 4 cities around the world. While the LA team spends most of the week together in the Downtown office, you can also mix it up and work from home or your favourite cafe!  And while we don’t have a Friday drinks cart (yet), you will get free toilet paper. A lot of it. And nothing beats that.

Lastly, you get to say the word ‘crap’ more than in any other job. Guaranteed.

Salary
This depends on your experience but just because we’re a social enterprise doesn’t mean you’ll get paid peanuts. Think chocolate covered macadamia nuts with some extra perks thrown in. In other words, we pay competitively and are determined to make this the best job you'll ever have – you won’t ever want to leave!

Who Gives A Crap also provides 4 weeks of paid annual vacation (woot!), flexibility to take extra unpaid leave or travel while working,  great health insurance, 401(k) matching, generous maternity and paternity leave and a whole lot of other stuff. And did we mention the free toilet paper?
