1. Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Logistics Operations, the Industrial Engineer’s role is responsible to ensure that all supplier/vendor, warehouse, and production material flow to include conveyance is defined to support a low volume, high mix production operations utilizing Lean Methodologies. The incumbent will work with General Assembly Parts Requirements (Presentation, QPC, Quality, etc.) and work in conjunction with the rest of the Manufacturing, Materials Management, Test, Consumer Products, Logistics and New Product Introduction (NPI) teams to define and specify takt times, process efficiency, layout optimization, and process conformance.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Define and implement a material conveyance system for production components including supplier to warehouse, warehouse to production, and supplier to production for manufacturing materials and components
  2. Coordinate and communicate technical information to and from all levels of the organization including suppliers, project managers, production team members, and operations managers including batch size, kits and to reflect all requirements in POs to suppliers.
  3. Developing department and organizational procedures and standards to improve business, production, and warehouse transactions such as picking, putting, material staging and material conveyance.
  4. Experience reading engineering drawings and gaining an understanding of manufacturing process requirements such as job sequence, workflow, fixture requirements, cell layouts, accessibility, ergonomics, time standards, etc.
  5. Develop technology roadmaps for a range of automation options for material conveyance with roller conveyors and flow racks, tugging train conveyance systems, parent child material cart concepts, lifting and tilting devices, automated guided vehicles, and automated guided carts.
  6. Plan methods for defining high level manufacturing plans, identifying / analyzing new technologies required, creating a value stream analysis, performing total space needs analysis, performing total capacity needs analysis, implementation planning, etc. preferred.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of material delivery concepts and material delivery carts for warehousing and its impact from supplier to end user.

Basic Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent work experience with evidence of exceptional ability.
  2. At least 3 years of experience designing material packaging and setting up packaging standards for a manufacturing operation. (e.g. rail, aviation, naval, heavy equipment).
  3. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and able to accommodate change to scope, timeline, or focus without sacrificing execution.
  4. Adept at communicating technical information to non-technical audiences.
  5. Capable of creating written reports, proposals and project documentation that speaks to all levels of audience.
  6. Knowledge of logistics, transportation alternatives and customer expectations.
  7. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality and workflow needs.
  8. A history of “hands-on” approach to problem solving and countermeasure implementation within own areas of responsibility.
  9. Experience using a Warehouse Management Systems
  10. Experience with cycle counting, picks, put-away, receiving and inspection processes, material review board (MRB), and Non-Conforming Material (NCR) processes.
  11. A history of driving projects in very adverse conditions.
  12. Practical knowledge of the lean tool box and ability to utilize lean principles to reduce waste.
  13. Knowledge of MRP / ERP / WMS systems is highly desired.
  14. Practical experience transferring technical knowledge, manufacturing knowledge, and proprietary technologies from lead factories to market factories preferred.
  15. Firm project management skills, including developing project plans, timelines / schedules, budgets, proposed layouts, resource requirements, calculating ROI, etc
