To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.

WHY WE NEED YOU

The Electromagnetic Systems division is responsible for the design and development of the Hyperloop Propulsion Motor, Levitation and Guidance Systems. These systems are electromechanical in nature and are designed by a highly cross-functional team of exceptional engineers in the areas of Electromagnetics, Mechanical Design, Heat Transfer, Materials Science, Testing, Controls, Embedded Systems, and Electrical System Modeling. We are seeking candidates with broad skillsets and various levels of experience to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals and work on one of the most challenging transportation applications on Earth, from right here at our Los Angeles facility. Dynamics modeling and feedback motion control algorithm design for pod motion. This includes throttling, braking, docking, levitation, and guidance. The candidate will work in the Vehicle Motion Control Group and ultimately be responsible for generating the set of control laws and state machines that will control the motion of the pod. Candidate will also generate and codify the safe operating regimes and high-level safety algorithms for the pod from the perspective of the propulsion motor, braking systems, levitation and guidance modules.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Modeling (linear and non-linear) of mechanical, electromagnetic and electrical plants
  • Design, implementation, experimentation, and optimization of fault tolerant motion control laws for vehicle level motion
  • Design, implementation, experimentation, and optimization of fault tolerant actuator commutation/control laws for levitation, guidance, braking, and propulsion subsystems of the vehicle
  • Stability, safety, and reliability analysis of vehicle motion control laws
  • Control law and state machine design for levitation, guidance, propulsion and braking prototypes
  • Algorithms for monitoring and protection at all levels (actuator to pod); include fault detection, isolation and control reconfiguration
  • Interface with Systems Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics, Command and Control, Embedded Systems, Electromagnetic Design, Power Electronics, and Test and Development teams
  • Assist in development of motion control architecture

WHAT YOU'VE DONE

  • Bachelor's in Engineering or another related field or equivalent work experience focused on motion control of a mechatronic system
  • Experience in classic, optimal, robust, and adaptive control techniques and implementation (loop-shaping, Lyapunov, H-infinity, sliding mode control, LQG/LTR, model adaptive identification controllers, fuzzy-logic, etc)
  • Experience in one or more of the following: MIMO control of highly redundant systems, stability/robustness characterization for highly non-linear systems, flexible mode analysis in the context of motion control, autonomous vehicle controls development, fault tolerant/resilient control design
  • Expert in Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow
  • Experience with configuration management tools (GIT or similar)
  • Deep understanding of mechanical, electromagnetic and power electronics systems
  • Systems and controls documentation (logical flow charts, sequence diagrams, etc.)
  • Trajectory planning for vehicles
  • Statistical estimation techniques (Kalman, extended Kalman, scented/unscented Kalman)
  • Familiarity with digital signal processing and sensor fusion

NICE TO HAVE

  • Power electronics, electromagnetic transducers, and vehicle dynamics analysis and modeling
  • System and state identification techniques (extended state observers)
  • Low level implementation of digital controllers
  • Controls software development for complex distributed systems on multiple target platforms with safety-critical applications using C, FreeRTOS, and/or VxWorks
  • Software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing of embedded systems
  • Validating computational models through experimental data analysis and system identification
  • Experience Motor control/commutation algorithm
  • Completion of at least one commercial vehicle program or motion control product (in robotics, automation/fabrication, machine tools) with significant ownership of system dynamics modeling, motion control algorithm design and implementation, sensor integration and calibration, or integration of motor and power electronics

WHY VIRGIN HYPERLOOP

  • Our Benefits: medical (including infertility & mental health), dental, vision, life, FSA, HSA, 401k, and more
  • Your Wellbeing: flexible work schedules, unlimited PTO, and 16 weeks of paid parental leave
