Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

The Additive Development team is responsible for developing and maturing the core additive manufacturing technology used to produce Relativity’s orbital-class launch vehicles. As part of this mission, our team develops, refines, qualifies, and processes to produce and validate the structural integrity of Relativity’s additively manufacturing components.

What you’ll do:

You will perform complex analyses applying Linear Elastic (LEFM) and Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) to evaluate damage-tolerant designs produced with Relativity’s Additive Manufacturing Technology, assessing whether a given flaw is safe from brittle fracture, fatigue, or plastic collapse under service loading conditions.

You will be responsible for:

  • Develop and evaluate fracture control methods for assurance of structural integrity of 3D printed rocket structures
  • Support laboratory testing and failure analysis.
  • Serve as an expert for fracture and fatigue
  • Develop concepts to improve fatigue life

You will collaborate with adjacent stakeholders including engineering teams to develop loading spectra from service and manufacturing conditions. You will be embedded with our material science, Non-Destructive Evaluation, and weld engineering teams to characterize material properties from specific processes and derive acceptance criteria for specific components and processes for our newest re-usable rocket, Terran R.

Additionally, you will represent the Additive Development teams in quality assurance and fracture control capacity in forums with internal engineering groups, government agencies, and customer-facing forums.

What you need to know:

  • BS or MS in an engineering related field
  • 5+ years performing Classical Stress Analysis techniques using hand calculations and Finite Element Methods using codes such as Femap, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS
  • Excellent background and knowledge of Fitness-For-Service (API 579), NASGRO or AFGROW
  • Extensive knowledge of material testing coupons, testing standards, and data analysis

Familiarity with high and low cycle fatigue testing for generation of S-N data, validation of fatigue performance and material crack growth rates

Nice to haves but not required:

  • PhD. in Fatigue or Fracture & Damage Tolerance
  • Knowledge of welding flaw acceptance criteria
  • Familiarity with traditional welding NDE methods (Digital RT, ECA, EMAT)

Knowledge of fracture control for additive manufactured structures
