Engineering Manager

SUMMARY
This role will be instrumental in growing the back end Engineering team and guiding software development to successfully build and scale product features serving large health organizations and their patients.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical part in mentoring, developing, and recruiting at WELL. You'll be crucial to cross-team collaboration between our engineers, product managers and customer success teams within an Agile development process. You will play a key role in assessing technical risks, defining the required processes to build in quality, and improving engineering velocity for everything that we ship.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring, and management support.
- Partner with Recruiting and HR to attract and retain a diverse team of engineers through hiring, mentoring, feedback, and career development
- Facilitate collaboration across the organization with other engineering teams, devops, product management, analytics, and design to solve interesting and challenging problems across our platform.
- Participate in backend engineering technology architecture discussions and decisions.
- Advocate for continuous improvements within backend development practices (CI, testing, operational efficiency, etc.)
- Grow the technical expertise of your team around quality, scalability, performance, and high availability using state of the art tools (preferably on AWS infrastructure).
- Assess risk in engineering deliverables and define strategies and processes to mitigate.
- Contribute to effective sprint planning process and standups.
- Support reuse of development work, platforming, and consistent technical and architectural direction across projects.
REQUIREMENTS
- Have a track record of mentoring and growing people
- Experience building enterprise SaaS products in highly regulated environments with low risk tolerance is highly preferred
- You are deeply knowledgeable and passionate about software development.
- Experienced with leading, coaching, and mentoring individuals and teams.
- You are a critical thinker and frequently spot risks and problems that others fail to catch.
- Good-to-great understanding of microservices, service-oriented architectures and scalable systems serving a large user base.
- Proficient in one of the core languages (java, typescript, python, golang, etc.), database design and SQL. For reference, node (typescript) is our primary programming language.
- Must work well under pressure, be sensitive to deadlines, be able to interact in a team environment, be able to adapt quickly to change
- 3+ years experience managing or leading teams developing SaaS products.
- Hands on experience working with Agile teams including Scrum.
- Track record of continuous improvement through innovation, delivery, process development, quality, etc.
- BS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent. Strong technical foundation in software engineering design principles.
