THE PURPOSE:

The Director of Software Architecture at Virgin Hyperloop One (VHO) will lead the architecture development, having technical oversight of the offboard software team and suppliers / partners. The role is pivotal in delivering a ground-breaking operational control system that will give Hyperloop passengers the fast, safe, direct-to-destination service they aspire to, while dealing with real-world events that would otherwise disrupt the service.

He or she will architect the system and lead its development. They will play a full role in the Software leadership team, contributing to the wider design of VHO's operational software, embedding best practices and developing the capabilities of our software teams.

 

THE ROLE:

  • Further develop the architecture for VHO's offboard operational control system, refining and decomposing it to ensure it meets our functional and non-functional requirements
  • Justify architecture choices through reviews, demonstrating how they produce an optimal system solution
  • Work with other engineering teams to:
    • Define functional architectures and produce detailed design specifications
    • Define physical and logical deployment constraints and criteria
    • Define interface specifications, both between systems and between components
  • Define discrete development platforms and appropriate patterns, practices, and tooling
  • Test and validate design choices through rapid prototyping
  • Champion engineering process development across the organization
  • Lead a team of software engineers, driving progress and developing the team’s capabilities

 

THE CANDIDATE:

  • Expert-level skills in software development and software architecture
  • Proven experience designing re-usable software platforms, frameworks, and libraries
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to present complex ideas in user-friendly ways
  • Self starter with strong interpersonal skills
  • Highly self-motivated with keen attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks effectively in a fast-paced start-up company environment

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience building or architecting high-reliability software systems
  • Proven experience building or architecting soft- or near-realtime software systems
  • Significant experience in one or more object-oriented programming languages
  • Strong understanding of distributed system design
  • Strong understanding of security principles
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written English
  • Proficiency with agile methodologies
  • Proficiency with modern coding principles, software life-cycles and deployment practices
  • Understanding of Linux fundamentals

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • BS, MS, or PhD Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Significant experience as line manager of software engineers (strongly preferred)
  • Understanding of performance tools, metrics and benchmarks
  • Experience building or architecting safety-related systems
  • Experience building or architecting software systems for use in critical infrastructure
  • Experience using or creating low-latency communication protocols
  • Experience with a variety of programming languages and ability to learn new as needed
  • Expertise with automated testing practices - unit, integration, and end-to-end V&V
  • Experience with relational databases, streaming, pub/sub and queue architectures
  • Experience developing using containerization technology
