Join us, and you can build something better for yourself, for our customers and for the world.The Aviation Safety Team in the Southern California Global Design Center seeks a Systems Safety Engineer (Level 3) to join our team in Long Beach, California.This engineer will be interested in exploring the design of commercial aircraft systems during development, modification, and operation. We are seeking innovative, enthusiastic, and highly collaborative teammates that have unlimited curiosity, and a passion for diving into design architecture details. The team's broad work statement will provide the opportunity to perform safety analysis at the component, system, and airplane level across a broad range of functional disciplines including; Avionics, Mechanical, Environmental, Electrical, and Propulsion. We are looking for individuals that are adept at evaluating system architectures to determine the consequences of failures, malfunctions, and defects, and can collaborate with Design Engineers to help create a robust design.Strong candidates have an engineering background, with a solid understanding of statistical methods. Our objectives are achieved through independent research, teamwork, creative thinking, and attention to detail. You'll be an integral part of supporting the continued safe operation of today's commercial fleet and the development of the next generation of commercial aircraft.Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify hazards associated with aircraft functions and the potential failure modes, and effects of systems and components performing those functions
  • Perform detailed analysis of aircraft system architecture
  • Model aircraft system functional relationships and apply quantitative analysis techniques, such as Fault Tree Analysis
  • Collaborate with design engineers to impart safety requirements into the design
  • Validate new aircraft design and in-service aircraft modification safety
  • Mine large databases for aircraft operational performance history, including failure and maintenance events
  • Perform statistical analysis using concepts such as, Weibull distribution, normal distribution, standard deviations, and probability of failure analysis
  • Analyze aircraft operational event data to determine potential unsafe conditions
  • Coordinate analyses, safety review board presentations, and corrective actions with the functional design organizations and the Federal Aviation Administration
  • Perform system safety and reliability analyses on aircraft across the entire lifecycle
  • Support root cause analysis using the Boeing Problem Solving Model
  • Contribute to the development of Safety Lessons Learned artifacts
  • Present safety analysis results to program stakeholders and leadership
  • Explore the design and integration of aircraft systems and their operational procedures

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Systems Safety Analysis Experience
  • Aircraft System Knowledge
  • Prior experience in performing statistical analysis

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • General knowledge of federal aviation regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of the engineering/scientific principles with particular emphasis on the aeronautical, mechanical, and electrical system disciplines is desired,
  • Working knowledge of aircraft systems, components, and functions (e.g. Flight Controls, Hydraulics, Avionics, Fuels, etc.) or Systems Integration is desired.
  • General knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 25.1309 is preferred.
  • General Knowledge of Recommended Practices ARP4754 (ARP) 4761.
  • Working knowledge of Continued Operation Safety Process (COSP) and reporting criteria is a plus.
  • Experience gathering, manipulating, and analyzing large amounts of data.
  • The ability to assess and document analysis to show compliance is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Typical Education/Experience:Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience).
