As a Director of Software Engineering, you will be at the forefront of building and shaping the future of our data platforms. You will lead and inspire multiple teams of talented engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and ownership. What you'll do:

• Lead and Inspire: Build, mentor, and lead multiple high-performing software engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity.
• Drive Technical and Business Strategy: Own the technical vision and strategy for your domain. You will work with your teams and partners to influence the broader business strategy, ensuring your technical roadmap aligns with and drives our business goals.
• Champion Engineering and Operational Excellence: Lead the charge in building and operating highly available, scalable, and resilient systems. You will champion a "You Build It, You Own It" model, empowering your teams to take full ownership of their work, from design and development to deployment and operations.
• Forge Strong Partnerships: Build and nurture strong relationships with cross-functional partners in product management, design, and other engineering teams to deliver on strategic goals and drive projects to successful completion.
• Innovate and Grow: Stay at the forefront of technology trends and encourage your teams to experiment with and adopt new technologies. You will foster an environment of continuous learning and improvement, where engineers are empowered to grow and develop their skills.

What you'll bring:

• Proven Leadership: Extensive experience in leading and managing multiple software engineering teams, with a track record of building and scaling high-performing organizations.
• Technical Depth: A strong technical background in software development, with experience in modern, cloud-based architectures. You should be comfortable with a variety of technologies, including but not limited to: Java, Go, Python, AWS, and modern data technologies like Spark.
• Strategic Mindset: The ability to think strategically and translate business needs into a clear technical vision and roadmap. You should be able to influence and align stakeholders at all levels.
• Passion for People: A deep commitment to the growth and development of your team members. You should have a history of mentoring and coaching engineers and engineering managers to reach their full potential.
• Collaborative Spirit: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work effectively with a wide range of partners and stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree
• At least 7 years of experience in software development
• At least 5 years of experience in people management

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 10+ years of experience in software development
• 7+ years of experience leading teams in a cloud-native environment
• 5+ years of experience in an Agile environment
• 5+ years of experience with large-scale data platforms and distributed systems

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $263,900 - $301,200 for Director, Software Engineering
Richmond, VA: $239,900 - $273,800 for Director, Software Engineering
San Francisco, CA: $287,800 - $328,500 for Director, Software Engineering
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
