Job Description

Our UX team is growing and we are looking for a passionate Senior Design Technologist who is a big-picture, problem-solving, systems thinker that knows how to get things done. You are a full-stack developer who builds bridges between design and engineering and develops tools to increase speed to launch. You have engineering mindset to solve problems systematically and possess the skill to develop reusable code for developers. You will work directly with our Design System team to elevate design language across the Nordstrom product experience and you will be able to directly influence design and technology decisions.  

As a Senior Design Technologist, you will be an integral part in building tools that will allow designers, engineers, and product managers to focus on product-level problems and ship high quality customer experience consistently and efficiently. In this role, you will help to build a scalable and tech agnostic design system, create a library of code-ready elements, automate processes that teams use to build, design, and analyze design components, and help assess the technical impact of design decisions.  

A day in the life… 

• Anticipate how aspects of the system will be used by designers, developers, and product stakeholders  
• Partner with UX, Product and Engineering teams to ensure that technologies translate through to digital products 
• Contribute to the UX design and front-end development of individual Nordstrom UI components, all at the same time 
• Provide creative and technical expertise within the UX practice to build tools that help operationalize and bring efficiencies to activities concerning the Design System 
• Help define a governance model for design and code contributions from other teams 
• Work on preserving the integrity of a product’s code and the quality of how it will show up for the end user 
• Build atomic-level components across web, iOS, and Android platforms 
• Create high-fidelity prototypes to help communicate component behavior 
• Increase communication efficiency between UX Design and Technology disciplines 
• Effectively present work to partner teams and all levels of leadership 
• Establish Design Technology as a core capability within the organization to help us build a scalable code-based design system  
• Raise the bar for UX across the organization, innovate in highly ambiguous situations and lead others in the face of uncertainty 

You own this if you have... 

• 6+ years of experience driving design innovation and prototyping projects 
• Expert in one or more of the following technologies: React, HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript, web and server programming, Responsive/Adaptive design 
• Android / iOS app development 
• Demonstrate coding samples in front end programming languages 
• An online portfolio demonstrating samples of design deliverables 
• Knowledge of user interface design, interaction design, and visual design principles  
• Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Axure, etc.  
• Ability to communicate complex systems and processes simply 
• You are a systems thinker – you can see how parts fit together and how small updates can propagate throughout the design system
