Lead UI/UX Designer for heavily-backed startup revolutionizing efficiency & communications in Construction

We’re building a smart telematics platform in the $20 trillion construction market.

We’re looking for an exceptional UI and UX Lead Designer to lead the design of our app and website. You’ll be based in El Segundo, Los Angeles, CA.

Our telematics product uses AI to provide actionable insights that construction companies use to cut fuel costs (which helps save the planet), avoid machine breakdowns, and manage their teams more effectively. We successfully piloted our solution with half a dozen customers, validating the need and business model. Last month we secured a multi-$m seed round from one of the world’s largest construction conglomerates.

We are now looking for the star Lead Designer to design our v1 product. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about designing UI as well as fantastic UX, and help us build a products that users would love using every day.

Construction: the $20 trillion market looking for a clue

The numbers are staggering. Construction is one of the world’s largest industries. 10% of the world’s GDP goes into construction.

It’s also one of the most inefficient industries in the world. While almost all other industries became more efficient, construction became more inefficient.  Since 1945, US productivity in manufacturing, retail, and agriculture has grown by as much as 1,500 percent, but productivity in construction has barely increased at all.

This is about to change. Construction companies are finally waking up. They are spending more on IT than ever before. The amount of venture capital investment into construction startups jumped 4x in the last year alone, passing $2bn.

To sum it up: today, Construction sucks. It is one of the world’s biggest and least efficient industries yet to be disrupted. It is an open field, a wide blue ocean for the best entrepreneurs, startups and investors. The time to get into this market is now.

Shaking the ground in heavy construction management

Here’s the gist: the heavy construction equipment industry is fragmented, nontransparent, and slow to change. Our co-founders have over 20 years’ experience and connections in the space. Our seed investor in one of the world’s largest companies in this market. That’s our unfair advantage.

When we say heavy construction equipment, we are talking about bulldozers, excavators, graders and the like (just the type kids love to play with as toys). They are used in almost every construction site. There are over 1.5 million heavy construction equipment in the US alone operated by over 100,000 companies. Most of these companies are hyper-local, have less than fifty employees, and don’t have the tools to be on top of everything. The owners of the business or the fleet managers want to improve their business operation but they either are not familiar with (or do not recognize) new tech to support them or do not have time to analyze machine operation data to increase the efficiency or to maintain them in a timely manner.

When one of their crewmembers leaves a bulldozer with the engine running, it costs the company (and the planet) a fortune a day. If a machine misses its maintenance and breaks down, we’re talking about huge unexpected maintenance cost (tens of thousands) as well as productivity loss due to downtime. And the fleet manager that has to stay on top of all of this, spends hours on the phone every day trying to do their best.

The good news: we’ve mapped how to automate and prevent the majority of these issues that could save up to $2,000 per machine per year by using Clue. That’s where Clue comes in.

Clue is a smart, AI-driven platform for heavy construction equipment fleets

Here’s what Clue does:

 (1) Heavy construction equipment companies own dozens of different machinery.

→ Clue connects remotely using telematics to 70% of machinery, obtaining data like fuel consumption, engine hours and more... In future, we will connect to 100% of machinery using custom-installed hardware.

(2) Fleet managers never have time to check their telematics data in the field.

→ Clue uses its AI engine to alert fleet managers when equipment is left running idly, warn about upcoming maintenance, notify about breakdowns as they happen, and more. The more data we have, the smarter our clues.

(3) Most teams use pen and paper for daily check-ins and checkouts

→ Clue does this automatically. The app shows fleet managers who started their day at a glance. Any alerts get sent to fleet managers to follow up.

(4) It is impossible to track crews’ productivity and equipment utilization

→ Clue tracks all the data of operators, equipment and jobs. We then use these data to report to company owners and supervisors so they can learn how to improve their teams’ productivity in future.

Usage by our pilot customers shows: they save 30% of fuel costs and asset depreciation by using Clue, and free up to 5 hours a week by being able to monitor their teams from the field.

We are in a good spot: Product defined and validated. Top tech and product team. Financed to Series A.

We already validated Clue’s core use cases and features. We have proof that we create value:

(1)      Our product saves customers an average $2,000 per year per machine and reduces the time required to manage the fleet by 4 hours a week. Other telematics apps do the opposite: they require more time from fleet managers and don’t help them save fuel costs. Why? Because they’re built for back office control and are designed for specific equipment manufacturers instead of providing actionable insights for all key equipment brands.

(2)     Clue is desired by fleet managers. Our initial marketing results in 7 live pilot customers, all of which are willing to pay for v1 product. We now need to build a self-serve platform to allow us to scale our footprint.

(3)      Our backend works. We manage to interface into the telematics system of key equipment brands. That said, it is a prototype. Building a scalable architecture from scratch is a priority.

(4)     We secured a large seed funding, a meaningful runway to reach a Series A. Our aggressive but achievable target is to raise our Series A in Q4/2020.
