Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated, experienced, and high-energy scientist to lead the conversion of technological concepts and research results to fieldable technologies and space systems. The Senior Scientist, Research & Technology role will work with engineers and scientists across multiple divisions to integrate research, technology development, and system architecting activities to develop successful programs to deliver game changing technology. This new position in the Research and Technology Collaboration Office of the Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) will drive technology development in support of multiple national security space customers as well as civil and commercial space customers. An innovative, versatile and self-motivated individual will make a big impact to our team.
Key Functions
• Integrate PSL-wide research with cross-enterprise engineering teams to develop a “product focus” directed toward multi-customer current and future needs, with specific focus on special customer research associated with space resiliency
• Working with other scientist and engineers to form roadmaps for “use cases” of R&D research across the portfolio and find customers for successful technology adoption
• In collaboration with research teams, identify and codify prototype opportunities by building larger cross-enterprise teams including research, engineering, and program management
• Establish and lead high-performing teams across multiple divisions and potentially geographic locations
• Provide technical leadership for proposals to capture resources for technology development projects and programs
• Manage portfolio of resources and tasks associated with special access program interests and reach-back activities, monitoring and ensuring progress across multiple research areas
• Collaborate as a key leader across all three PSL sub-divisions
• Provide regular communications with management and customer regarding program status and technology risk areas
Qualifications
Required
Ph.D or equivalent in science or engineering with experience in developing unique end-to-end space system technology development
Twelve (12) or more years of engineering team leadership, prototype development and technical leadership associated with space hardware
Experience in Government-Industry partnerships or collaborations
Ability to work outside personal expertise areas to cultivate new ideas across PSL
Experience with integrated ground and/or space system engineering with in-depth knowledge of one or more technical engineering areas
Significant experience and demonstrated success working with a matrixed engineering organization in technical areas outside personal expertise
Ability for occasional travel within US, typically one trip per month
Recent experience in leading research and/or technology development proposal effort
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
Preferred
Twenty (20) years of technical leadership of research and/or technology development projects across a diverse range of technology areas.
Demonstrable history of multiple research grant awards
Recent experience with adaptive optics and/or spacecraft propulsion systems
