Narrative Writer
Riot Games was established in 2006 by entrepreneurial gamers who believe that player-focused game development can result in great games. In 2009, Riot released its debut title League of Legends to critical and player acclaim. As the most played PC game in the world, over 67 million play every month. Players form the foundation of our community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the League of Legends experience.
We’re looking for humble but ambitious professionals who can teach us a thing or two. We promise to return the favor. Like us, you take play seriously; you’re passionate about games. We embrace those who see things differently, aren’t afraid to experiment, and who have a healthy disregard for constraints.
As Narrative Writer, your experience as a published and professional writer across a broad range of media will help you drive creative initiatives that include dreaming up new champions, fleshing out their stories, and imagining their worlds, working together with artists and designers who will help produce them and the passionate players who will bring them to life. Since your ability to develop narrative extends off the page and into pitches, you’ll use your craftsmanship to generate excitement from seasoned storytelling professionals outside of gaming. Ultimately, it’s your love of gaming, passion for writing, and highly-polished portfolio of work that’ll position you to help players create their own unique narratives through play, and you can’t wait to help them write the next chapter.
You are:
-An experienced storyteller: you’ve racked up at least four years of professional experience as a writer, or similarly gaming-focused creative type; you’ve proudly produced at least one top-tier commercial creative work and have probably been officially recognized for its awesomeness
-A writer: you treat writing as a craft, studying and honing it by practicing and experimenting every day, participating in writers’ groups, and reading other writers who inspire you; if you’re not writing, you’re probably sleeping— but with a notebook next to your bed because the moment you wake up, you’re jotting down any ideas you might’ve dreamed up
-A versatile creator: you’ve proven your ability to write and create across a variety of creative mediums
-A videogame encyclopedia: you’ve stayed up until the wee hours playing every notable game of the last decade and can speak critically and in detail about their narratives
You will:
-Work with multidisciplinary team members to best deliver on creative vision
-Own creative areas such as the creative process for conceptualizing new champions in the League of Legends universe
-Help conceptualize and guide proposals for new characters within existing IPs
-Write character biographies, short stories, comic teasers and medium-length comics just to name a few
Don’t forget to include a resume and cover letter. We receive a lot of applications, but we’ll notice a fun, well-written intro that shows us you take play seriously.
