The Specialist is expected to run catastrophe models (primarily AIR Touchstone), manage exposure data quality, perform portfolio analyses, and act as the main point of contact with the BPO team. The role requires both technical expertise and project management skills, ensuring that underwriting objectives are accurately translated into modeling deliverables.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute catastrophe modeling workflows using AIR Touchstone, including account-level and portfolio-level analyses.
  • Manage BPO vendor relationship: assign modeling tasks, clarify modeling specifications, and provide feedback on deliverables.
  • Perform quality control on modeling inputs and outputs (e.g., property characteristics, geocoding, PMLs, AALs).
  • Support the underwriters with ad-hoc modeling requests and risk analysis for large accounts or unique structures.
  • Conduct aggregation monitoring, real-time event modeling (e.g., via Alert), and support exposure reporting across business segments.
  • Develop and maintain internal documentation of modeling standards, SOPs, and data dictionaries.
  • Assist with regulatory and rating agency reporting (e.g., NAIC, AM Best).
  • Partner with actuaries and underwriters on portfolio steering initiatives, trend analysis, and reinsurance optimization.
  • Support the use of AIR modeling data for internal and head office reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to validate requirements and assist in the integration of AIR workbooks into the Underwriting Workbench.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Risk Management, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in catastrophe modeling or exposure management in the (re)insurance industry.
  • Hands-on experience with AIR Touchstone required; experience with RMS models a plus.
  • Knowledge of catastrophe perils (e.g., hurricane, earthquake, wildfire) and how they impact property risk.
  • Proficiency in Excel, SQL, and geospatial tools (e.g., AIR’s Geospatial Module).
  • Experience working with or managing outsourced/BPO modeling resources preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to serve as a bridge between technical modeling and underwriting business needs.
Preferred Attributes
  • CEEM or other catastrophe modeling certifications a plus.
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in multi-line property portfolios or commercial large schedules.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for CAT exposure (e.g., ORSA, NAIC Climate Risk Disclosure).
Work Style
  • Hybrid work model.
  • Flexibility required during CAT season and quarterly reporting periods.

Salary: In New York City, and New Jersey the base pay range is $95,000.00 - 125,000.00. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
