 Want to Join the Circus?

We are looking for an experienced back-end engineer to us help us build the IT infrastructure for our micro-amusement park in development. This park will include VR experiences, high-tech carnival games, story rooms, an interactive supper club, a robot bartender and fantastic flaming and scintillating attractions from the future.  And every single one has an Ethernet port on the back.

Our Backend Infrastructure team is responsible for ensuring that the tiny Linux machines in our carnival games have respectable uptimes.  That a guest can reliably use their mobile phone like a remote control, activating lights and robots on a whim.  That our robot bartender doesn’t over-pour.  And that the Point-of-Sale terminals, swipe card machines, backend-reporting systems, and show-control systems all work together in virtuous harmony.

If you sought to apply your deep knowledge of programming, Unix, and devops to the banking or SaaS sectors, you will be gravely disappointed.  But if you’d like to run away with the circus and help build the most exciting new amusement-park concept in 25 years... then step right this way.

Requirements

Let’s get the requirements out of the way.

You must be a master of Unix.  You must wield the Unix command-line like a powerful club, bashing your way through any obstacle.  I wrote this job description in Vim and copied it into a word processor.  We live on the command-line.

You command Python to do all your bidding. We use Python everywhere.  You’ll help develop and maintain our existing interactive show-control systems written in Python.  Python is also the magical glue that we use to bind together third-party APIs.  There are many of those!  From game leaderboard APIs to cloud-based POS systems to lighting control boards, we integrate with a great many third-party systems.

Some other nice-to-have stuff:

We use ReactJS, React Native, and all its crazy nodejs build tools to author front-end interfaces for game operators and back-office staff.  You don’t need to be a web developer, but a passing knowledge of how React works is quite helpful.

We’re increasingly Docker-izing our services.  Familiarity with containerization (is that really a word?) is very helpful.

We’ll be integrating the fun stuff with the boring stuff that lawyers and accountants love, like POS systems and predictive analytics.  (It can’t all be fun and games, right?) Experience with this integration is important.

Engineers at Two Bit Circus are developing interactive experiences that run on MacOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino.  There’s a lot of Unity development, as well as C++ (OpenFrameworks) and firmware.  Our partners are working with cutting edge game engines and hardware that nobody has ever seen before.  We get to figure out how to make it all work together.

Formal Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience with a sizable fraction of the aforementioned technologies.
  • 2+ completed projects through the entire life cycle
  • Reliable schedule/time management skills
  • Ability to learn new tools and workflows with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • Proactive, results oriented mindset with high attention to detail and quality
  • Must include the word vaudeville in your cover letter when applying
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis

Extra bonus points for:

  • Experience working with arcade games or out-of-home environments
  • Rapid prototyping experience
  • Passion for games and VR!
  • One-of-a-kind circus talents

Benefits

  • Stock option package commensurate with experience
  • Flexible PTO
  • Health benefits
  • Dog friendly workshop (no cats allowed)
  • Super creative work space
  • Monthly happy hours where we test out all our new games and inventions
