About Gem
Gem is a blockchain start-up based in Venice Beach, CA that accelerates the deployment of blockchain solutions for enterprises and industries. We're working with visionary companies in the automotive insurance, healthcare, and supply chain industries. We work step by step with our customers to design, build, and scale blockchain projects. Our mission is to link together the world’s business data using GemOS, the enterprise blockchain data exchange and collaboration platform. The Role
Gem’s Systems Engineer will face interesting challenges ranging from maintaining and scaling our internal microservice architecture, our data ingestion pipeline, all the way to the distributed systems and the management of the actual blockchain layer. They’ll work with some of the biggest names in healthcare and supply chain to build platforms that will radically change the way companies connect.

What you’ll do
- Monitor the existing infrastructure powering the GemOS platform
- Work with all the existing Systems Configuration Management Tools and cloud deployments
- Manage all perspectives of the software to system lifecycle and plan for improvements and change
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop deployment strategies for existing and new services
- Evaluate and implement technologies that improve efficiency, performance and reliability of the infrastructure
- Budgeting and Cost Analysis of the infrastructure
- Develop and implement scaling strategy for the infrastructure
- Design one-click deploys of the Gem platform to a multitude of cloud providers
What you’ll need
- Experience working with highly available, distributed systems in both cloud and bare metal infrastructure
- The ability to think and work in different levels of abstractions, from high level, to crucial lower level details
- A deep understanding of systems architecture concepts for real world engineering issues, not theoretical ones!
- A solid understanding of the following tools and technologies - AWS, Distributed Systems, Cloud infrastructure, Terraform, Linux internals, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Redis, Splunk, Jenkins
- A strong grasp with one of the following languages: Python, Bash, Ruby, and/or Java
- Understands CI/CD model and is able to architect the workflow
Goals for the first 90 days:
- Have a full understanding of our infrastructure and its major systems. This includes the following:
--> Kafka cluster (dev, prod)
--> Elasticsearch cluster (dev, prod)
--> Kubernetes cluster (dev, prod)
--> VPN
--> Bastion hosts
--> Jenkins
--> Docker repository
--> Splunk cluster
--> VPC topology (including security groups and instance isolation)
- Full audit of our monitoring and alerting capabilities with plans/recommendations for improvements
- Full audit of SSH key policy and plans/recommendations for improvements
- Full audit of our automation scripts and plans/recommendations for improvements
