The Electromagnetics team is responsible for the design and development of the Hyperloop One Propulsion System. This includes the motor, propulsion, power electronics, high power solid state switches, controllers and system algorithms, and supporting systems. These components combine electromagnetic, electric circuit, mechanical, thermal, control, and embedded software sub-systems. We are seeking candidates with broad skill sets and various levels of experience to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals at our Los Angeles facility.

Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for:

  • Creating and maintaining models in Unigraphics NX
  • Designing components and systems for various Propulsion related sub-systems including the propulsion motor, motor drive, and mechanical support structures
  • Analysis and verification of preliminary and detail design with hand calcs and FEA
  • Defining safety factor requirements
  • Integration between propulsion systems and the tube
  • Validating computational models with experiments
  • Preparing and presenting results with clarity and brevity
  • Working with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely completion of functional hardware

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering or related discipline, MS preferred
  • Non-linear material properties
  • Material and structural testing
  • Identifying and utilizing applicable industry safety standards
  • Significant experience with FEA (ANSYS or NASTRAN)
  • Utilizing engineering principals to design complex systems
  • Proficiency in Siemens Unigraphics NX 6 or higher
  • Proficient in GD&T
  • At least 2 years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • Design of electric motor structures
    • Design of rotating machinery
    • Design of large, complex assemblies
    • Manufacturing and fabrication methods including transfer or injection molding
  • Experience developing a product from concept to production 
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
