Senior Director, New Business Development
The Sr. Director of Business Development will lead the business development team for troncX—the division of tronc, Inc., that encompasses our digital and emerging businesses.
The Sr. Director will play a pivotal role in this organization, working across troncX’s business units, as well as working cross-functionally – with sales, editorial, legal and digital product development.
This person will be responsible for identifying new strategic opportunities for the company, including M&A. S/he also will also develop business plans for tronc’s emerging growth areas. This position is a strategic role, not a commissioned sales role.
The Sr. Director will build and oversee a team of dealmakers and analysts. The team will prospect, qualify, negotiate and help implement partnerships, investments and acquisitions. Mentoring team members to develop a world-class department is required.
The person who will succeed in this role has a strong digital background, plus an understanding of products and revenue models for multiple platforms. They also thrive in rapidly changing environments. Interpersonal skills are equally important; Relationship building and buy-in are central to the process.
Responsibilities:- Build a business development team
- Evolve team’s negotiation and modeling skills
- Qualify new in-bound opportunities
- Determine strategic fit for today and/or in several years
- Model various outcomes
- Leverage research to drive decision-making
- Experience developing solid estimates when not all details not available to drive decisions/actions
- Identify and surface new revenue and strategic opportunities
- Continually track the digital landscape
- Partner with product, technology and program management to create actionable recommendations
- Develop benchmarks and ongoing monthly reporting to measure progress
- Approach projects methodically: Surface both quantitative and qualitative factors related to potential partnerships
- Summarize and clearly communicate results to cross-functional teams
- 10 plus years of relevant experience, ideally with some in publishing/media space. Previous roles with legacy media companies are extremely useful.
- Experience negotiating complex contracts with legal and financial implications, as well as structuring and closing business development deals.
- Experience optimizing partnerships, once they close.
- Comfortable working with legal teams. Must not be afraid of getting into the details!
- MBA and/or consulting background is desirable, but not required.
