Consider your next pitch. You likely want to inspire, amaze, or dazzle your audience. And have you practiced public speaking recently? Oh, not since high school?

Pick up these tips by exceptional public speaking coach John Bates, who’s coached top execs and TED Talks presenters.

Story First, Facts Second

We’ve all been taught to quote facts and figures when we speak. Sure, they can boost credibility, but they can’t tell your story for you. No number you cite will matter until people have some emotional connection with you. Make that the priority.

Set the Tone

Create an intention for how you want the audience to feel. Would you like them to feel nervous, relaxed, or present? Start off your presentation with that element in mind.

Monotony is the Mother of Despair

Standing out is a top priority for any speaker. In all you do, seek to distinguish yourself. Vary your tone, and differentiate yourself from the person before and after you. Do you ever really plan how you’ll stand out?

Move with Purpose

Your body language tells a story. Any movements you make must have intention behind them. Pacing, or other non purposeful movement utterly saps your power.

Focus on the Audience

You’re going to be scared when you get up there- and that’s ok. It is natural and it happens to everyone. Think of it as a sign that something great is about to happen. Then, make the audience your focal point. When you concentrate on communicating your message, your fear diminishes.

John Bates will be presenting a Speaker Bootcamp at Cross Campus on Wednesday, September 18th.
