Breaking Down The Top 100

*Rank is determined by total Los Angeles County-based employees at digital technology companies as of August 2015.
*MaxCDN, Cargomatic, and Retention Science all reported the same number of employees and therefore share the 100th spot
* Correction: Five companies were wrongfully ommited from the list including Demand Media (350+), Media Temple (230+), Zealot Networks (225+), Dun & Bradstreet (150+), and Thrive Market (60+). We apologize for this error.

We are excited to recognize The Top 100 Tech Employers in Los Angeles. These digital companies have driven an impressive amount of economic growth by creating almost 28,000 jobs and have played a large part in making LA the third best startup ecosystem in the world.

LA is still content driven

While the industry breakdown shows there is a generally even representation on the list, digital media reigns supreme with 24 companies cracking the Top 100. Media giants like Snapchat, Riot Games, Hulu, Netflix, and BuzzFeed demonstrate that LA remains a storytelling city and the tech scene has found new outlets to deliver that content.

Despite digital media’s majority share of the landscape, there appears to be no industry outlier in LA’s tech scene. The ecosystem’s diversity is even more apparent when viewing the top 20 companies on the list — in which the e-commerce, digital media, and software industries were all represented at least four times.

Santa Monica is king… for now

There may be an impending migration to Playa Vista on the horizon, but for now, Santa Monica remains the city's main tech hub with 23 of the top 100 companies. Downtown LA and Playa Vista are a close second.

"It’s exciting to see top tech talent in LA that didn’t exist before,” Don Robertson, TrueCar’s Executive Vice President of People, said. “The fact that TrueCar offers a progressive culture and an ocean view of Santa Monica doesn’t hurt either. We’ve also been able to successfully tap into the entertainment industry for recruitment purposes and marketing content.”

The majority of the companies on the list are headquartered in LA county, while many industry giants consider Los Angeles their second home. Of the top 50 companies, 39 have LA headquarters, and 33 are still privately held.

Age is an honor

Amid a city of fast-growing startups, the industry staples have still maintained their dominance (eight of the top 10 companies were founded before the new millennium). The youngest companies on the list are DEFY Media, Realty Mogul, Service Titan, and MakersKit, all of whom were founded in 2013.

“Los Angeles is a great place to build a tech company, and every year it just gets better. LA is now a force to be reckoned with, able to compete with technology hubs such as Silicon Valley,” said Dave Hagan, CEO of Boingo Wireless. “Our great institutions, including UCLA, USC, and Caltech, among others, are producing incredible home-grown talent. We graduate the largest number of engineers—more than any other geographic region in the nation—which is ideal for the LA tech industry."

Breaking down the capital

With over $3 billion in funding in 2014, LA has not slowed down in 2015. Known as one of the most capital-heavy cities in the world, LA tech has already accumulated over $1.87 billion at the halfway point of 2015 — highlighted by Snapchat’s $537.6 million round in May, Dollar Shave Club’s $75 million round in June, and Flipagram’s $70 million round in July.

Who’s on the rise

Omaze has gone from a bootstrapped apartment-based startup to a $10 million dollar company in just over six months. The site operates as a raffle-style charitable giving platform that has brought together LA’s entertainment, startup, and nonprofit industries to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences for users.

Los Angeles’ gaming companies have been on fire this summer as the mobile and online gaming industries continue to grow. Currently sitting at #46 on the list, SGN received a $130 million investment from Korea’s Netmarble, which will help the Culver City company branch into the lucrative Asian gaming market.

ServiceTitan, the Glendale-based mobile management platform, has created a strong foothold in an underutilized home service industry. The company closed an $18 million Series A round in June and plans to double their current employee count.

The quality and quantity of companies in the Los Angeles tech ecosystem has continued to rise across the board. With access to superior university talent, investor capital, and the lucrative entertainment industry, LA has solidified itself as a thriving hub in the landscape of American tech.
